Well, we got our keys to the new house and thought I would post a thread about putting together the new man-cave. This thread will develop over a long period of time as we will not be moving in immediately so hopefully the new set-up will be ready by the time we move. It will take weeks though!!

First up - the outside of the house. It's upside down, ground floor is a garage, utility room and loo. On the first floor are four bedrooms and a bathroom while on the top floor is the lounge, kitchen, dining room and loo. My man-cave will be in the garage.

Here is the garage as it was three weeks ago when we we able to go and take a look.

Here it is now, my area will be the alcove bit at the back, dimensions 93 inches wide and 46 1/2 inches deep. Plenty of room for a seperate airbrush/painting area....

I am now planning the work area before getting a carpenter to install it. I will put up a plan of what I am doing next.

I love seeing these develop. I have, for the very first time an indoor dedicated space where I can build and paint but it is cramped. I keep looking at the unused summer house at the top of the garden with the idea of insulating and lining it and fitting it out. Just not sure if I would be as eager to go up the garden in winter and wait for it to warm up:oops:

And here's where I get a bit jealous, being squeezed on the end of a computer desk I have to share with everyone else in the house. I'm going to show this thread to the wife - that will probably get me a tent in the garden......................

Great idea Barry I'm looking forward to seeing your new man cave develop

I really like seeing other man caves and spaces.

It always gives ideas of ways to alter or do something else with my own space.

I genuinely appreciate my better half who has let me take over a 12' x 11' room off the back of the lounge.

It's my man-cave, office, workshop, computer and music room all in one.

I do hanker after a (big) insulated shed to use for paint etc, plus somewhere to build in a nice detailed scenic Scalextric.....

Keep us posted with what you do.

Roy.

Very nice Barry. You've got a clean slate to start with which should mean you can purpose build something to suit you and how you work, you lucky beggar :)

Cheers

I hope this can be seen. I am doing this on my phone and won't see whether it works properly until morning. It's a plan of what i want to do. There may be some adjustments.

I am still a long way from even getting the bench installed but I have packed everything up ready to transport.

And the stash plus my 'spares box'

I will be seeing the carpenter tomorrow morning to show him the plans and get a price and hopefully a date for the job shortly after. Then it will be some floor covering.

My thoughts on the floor. If you have any suggestions they would be welcome.

I want a low nap carpet, a royal blue preferred. The colour will make dropped parts stand out while a low nap will prevent them from bouncing too far and without small parts getting lost in the tufts.

I've got a ribbed black rubber mat under my work bench. Dropped parts seam to stop where they drop and not fly off in all directions.

I admire your optimism Barry!

I have a slate floor, definitely imparting a good bounce and camouflage for errant parts, so not recommended. I do have a red rug, very short nap, behind but I'm not sure that this helps much either. Some parts manage to bounce of the slate, seemingly acquire energy quite contrary to the laws of physics, and then smuggle themselves under the rug. It's nearly enough to make you believe that Uri Geller isn't the nasty little con man that he is and that some strange powers do operate in our universe. :)

Cheers

That carpet monster Steve!!

I am thinking of getting the carpet fitted so there are no edges for bits to creep under or for the carpet monster to hide and have everything under the table off the floor. In theory dropped pieces should be easy to spot....

This was in the papers today being touted as having a use as a man cave.

Well I have just ordered a modular system for the new man-cave, from here:

http://www.hobbyzone.pl/en/12-modular-workshop-system/

Here is a graphic:

View attachment 250914

I have not ordered all the modules above but I will have three rows extending around two corners but without one side stack and no triangular end bits.

Each module is 6" high, 6" deep and 12" long (approx)

I will have one corner top and three straight tops to fit Vallejo size bottles (156 bottles in all), the tool rack, and shelf corner top unit.

The two rows below will include two corners with drawers, two corners with shelves, a few large drawer units, small drawer units, shelves and a kitchen roll holder.

In all its about £231 including shipping from Poland and they estimate 3 to 6 days!! I thought it might be weeks and I will not be ready to set it up until long after it arrives.

It will sit nicely alongside my spray booth.

In respect of cost, yes it looks a bit pricy but when I looked at the cost of a range of other solutions its not bad at all.

If you look at my plan posted previously you can see where it fits.

I will have the need to keep one of my existing paint racks for pigments/metalisers/washes which will fix to the wall to my right.

I rather like nice environment to build.

That looks like a neat system. I keep all my paints etc in a set of draws under my bench. I doesn't bother me that I can't see them without opening the draws. Most of the other stuff is in a cupboard, out of the way, the other side of my spray booth.

I think the most important thing is to allow a decent size of work top. I have fairly limited space, though I know I'm more fortunate than some, and decided that I would make that my priority.

I know we've posted images in another thread, but here's one I've just taken to show what I mean.

You can never have too much space to work in and I do believe an effort to fit the biggest practical work top into whatever space you have is something you won't regret !!!

Cheers

I totally agree about space Steve and I have certainly got that with my set-up. More in fact than I have now which is itself quite a bit.
