That's what I did. I've a particle filter at the front & an active charcoal filter behind the fans to deal with odours. Necessity may be the mother of invention, but so is a thin wallet!

Personally I don't think they are expensive.  It is possible to get cheaper of course and you could probably lash one up yourself with a box, a fan, trunking and gaffer tape but it all depends on what you want.

I like what you have done Barry it is very nicely layed out i was thinking could you not hang a heavy set of curtains across the door to keep out the draft and that gives you the option to move them to get the door open .

There are insulation kits available Steve.  Insulation material is taped to the inside of the garage door, that plus a draught excluder (again garage specific) and a couple of oil filled rads should do the job for the winter though I may use a fan heater to give it a boost in the coldest periods...

Well there seems now to be some progress at the bottom of the missus chain and she is hoping to agree an exchange and completion sometime this week.  Fingers crossed as so far her sale has progressed at a glacial speed and she will not agree to moving in until she has at least exchanged although, in theory we could have done so weeks ago.


Even so in a couple of weeks she will be out for a day with her grandaughter and I will be getting a few hours in the new home on my own and will have time to progress the work area. Blimey she has even given me her blessing to do so....The light to fit, a couple more shelves and then to organise the paints, tools and materials...even if we have not moved in by then!!!

Barry very nice set up I did not see you post till after I posted my thread on them titled Hobby zone PL. every thing you say about it I total agree with you. well made good service from company. I don't know how you could have built a couple a day. as soon as mine turned up I was in my den building them all at once. was like a big kid on Christmas day

Work is the answer. I run a business and only get an hour or so a day for the hobby either early evening or an hour before bed.   That is how it was, when I move in with my lady it may be different as we need to see how we can accommodate each other as we both run businesses   


Anyway, the good news is that we will be moving in over Thursday, Friday and Saturday.  The further good news is that the missus is talking her grandaughter to 'Gangsta Grannie' at the Marlow Theatre Sunday afternoon and I will have all afternoon free to finish off the man cave and organise my workstation.  With her blessing   


With a bit of luck I will be cutting plastic on my HKM 1/32 Mossie on Monday. I will post pics when organised and I will run a build thread.  In the lay off period I have stacked up with all sorts of new tools and materials to use in the new work area.

I Hope you have better luck in the winter than I do Barry. I have a similar sort of set up - I have Thermal Boarded across the Garage Door and sealed it with draft excluder and finally boarded over it. I use 2 x 2000w oil rads - Oh and I have Insulated the roof.


Problem is in the winter the Garage is usually about 5c and If I put the Rads on I can count on it getting it up to 12c after several hours. - by which time I have usually given up.


A blow heater makes a very small area tolerable. - In my garage the cold comes straight through the concrete slab (although I have thermal underlaid and then laid laminate over that)


I tried leaving the Rads on but the Electricity Bill became truly catastrophic!


I'm still trying to find a solution and sadly it means that the winter is virtually modelling free for me.   - although I have got an idea about getting a wood burner fitted.

Well ......  its ready.  Not quite finished as I will have to wait until we are fully unpacked and have cleared out the garage a bit before I can get some underlay and crpet down.  I also need to get two shelves up, some heating ready for winter and the door insulated. But all that can wait a bit.

You may notice gaps in the paint racks...


i have organised them keeping the RAF colours together, Luftwaffe, American,Japanese and misc colours.  It based on the AKI Air Series sets with Vallejo filling in gaps.  Withn the new Vallejo Air War paints it means I can have a very comprehensive set of each.  I am waiting for the new colours inn the Air War sets to become available as individual bottles to fill the gaps.  I have alsom left a clear row between sets to allow for expansion.  I understand there are Soviet, Japanese sets to be released and I will need room for them....


I will start a thread for my first build in this man-cave to start this week...

I dont know how well the garage floor is insulated, but if built to the same spec as the house, modern building regs have probably got all the floors insulated.


A company here makes matting with electric heating mesh that once down and covered with your chosen covering gives a very comfortable warmth. And is actually not that expensive to run. (over here anyway)...Have a google after Devi heat.


Love the work area. (way to nice to call it a cave.! LOL)

Before I moved and lost my workshop attached to the garage. I found leaving a 2kW oil filled radiator on a thermostat set to 10C permanently did not cost too much, this meant by turning it up the workshop came up to a reasonable temperature for working quickly and by not letting it get too cold and too large a differential meant it did not get damp and kept my tools in good condition.


if I remember correctly Barry you are near Dover, give the Dealec website a look for heaters and thermostats they should be reasonable on price for good brands, including floor heating mats if you go that way (disclaimer I used to work for them before moving to Belgium and back into science).
