It's a sort of "out of the box" diorama. I don't know about the dam but the Airfix Lancaster is a nice little kit.

Steve

The dam is flimsy by all accounts (vacform i think). Still at least a company out there is making a dam to go with the theme of the model it is depicting

That should look the bees knees when you have done your magic on it.

Looking forwards to seeing that one.

Dont know if you know allready but Vajello do some exellent 'water' effects; check ot out here:

Acrylicos Vallejo If this dont link direct, click on the flag then minitues and model then click on water and stone in the menu.!!

Not sure about the spray. There is a big splash when the mine first hits the water. It seems to knock a bit off the aircraft here.

YouTube - More Bouncing Bomb Boo Boo

It worked though

I've seen a film of the German version. It was smaller and dropped from an Fw190. On the first bounce a rocket ignited making for a very long "bounce" indeed. They were going to use it against ships but it was too innacurate.

My Dad worked with Barnes Wallace after the war on a contraption to pluck downed pilots from the sea (by helicopter) without the need to lower a diver. I've got some photos somewhere of my Dad hovering over Valetta harbour with the thing in the water which I'll put in a seperate thread. The system obviously didn't work as there's no sign of it today!

Steve

If you watch this clip you can see the only live footage of an actual bouncing bomb going off

From 1 min 25 to 1 min 53

I live about 6 miles from the drop point for the tests on the Kent coast. One of the test bombs was rediscovered and dug out of the gravel about 6 years ago.

Can't remember where it went though.

That was a very interresting documentary you posted there Al.

I recall an other raid of this type involving mossies with bouncing bombs dropped over land on a raid on the V2 rocket factories. Any one know what the film was called that was based on this?

Sorry for going a little bit off topic.

Why not do it with the bomb just before it hits the water. Play on the suspence. i must admit I have no idea at present as to how you could do the splash.

I thought the bouncing bomb tests were done at the ladybower resevoir in the derwent valley, peak district? Looking forward to seeing this evolve.

Tony B

Ladybower was used for pilot/crew training because the surrounding hills and the dam wall/towers closely resembled the targets. The actual bomb tests were carried out in the Thames estuary between Herne Bay and Birchington, nr Margate.

They used genuine bomb casings but filled with concrete to replicate the explosives.

A number of the casings exploded on impact, which is how they discovered the need to spin them before dropping.

As I said earlier, one was recovered recently and is now in a museum, I think locally.

(God, can I bore or what??)

the pilot training was done on the derwent dam just a bit further up the valley from the ladybower dam, because the derwent has two towers very similar to the german target dams, there was a 65th anniversary flypast by the BOBMF lanc about 2 years ago, magic!! cant wait to see the dio finished scott . cheers tony

Beat me to it Tony, Odd how Derwent and Ladybower get called the same thing. I used to love parking up by the Derwent wall, crossing over the dam and climbing up the hills on the east side, follow the tops to the top end of Derwent Reservoir, down to Slippery Stones bridge and back down the road. great days walking round there.

Hi Scott, Online shopping is nice but it lacks the 'feel good factor' that you get when you go into a model shop and there it is - on the shelf - saying BUY ME. Good choice, based on your last model I expect it to be finished by Friday. Enjoy Derek

There are some great tips on this video for making splashes in water Revell PT-109 PT Boat + Diorama Tutorial on youtube. Only trouble is its in japaneese. I think He is using some sort of modelling clay and silicone from a tube mixed with different colours, but he gets some amazing results well worth going through all of his videos. I could'nt remember how to do the link to it as I don't use youtube a lot, but if you copy the blue writing and paste it into google I would think you will find it OK

Way ahead of you on making the splash effect, will be working on that tonight. Iam finishing the dam then building the Lancaster, i was thinking of adding a pair of flak 38's one in each tower.....what do you think? As the Mohne dam had a pair of flak guns defending it anyway, so opinions please>

I remember back in about 76 or 77 standing looking down the side of the Monasea Dam and being able to see where the repairs had been done after the war. My dad spoke with a chap who worked there as an engineer and turned out that he was a German gunner based on the dam in charge of one of the flak 38's. His story was very interesting as some relation of his in the UK was an engineer on the Lancaster and had sent him pictures of it, he just loved the Lancaster and on their bombing run he could not bring himself to shoot at them. As soon as the war was over he came to the UK so as he could see a lancaster up close. He spent 5 years living and working helpingto rebuilding work in Coventry. He did get to see a Lancaster and had the great pleasure of being taken up in one, He said it was one of the best aircraft he had ever seen and he had also a tatoo done on his back depicting the attack. My dad kept in contact with Jorgen until his death in 1982.

I look forward to watching this space for the progression on your build.
