Very much interested in your opinions on this little problem I have, I have two German Shepherds named Monty and Rommel, now last night an old buddy of mine called round to see me about a scrape on his car and get a rough idea of the paint job needed.

And he brought me two dog tags to put on the dogs colar, now one is the RAF roundal for Monty and the other is the Iron cross for Rommel, now what are your opinions of letting my dogs wear them, I know the roundal would be ok, but the iron cross is where my dilemma is.

There is far too much of this P.C. nonsense going around...Let Rommel wear it, it's your dog!

As we all know, the Iron Cross was awarded for bravery, perhaps given a bit too freely, but an honour just the same.

It doesn't carry the same stigma as other German 'Insignia' i.e the Swastika and the SS badges. So I say go for it Ray and I bet you there would be a load of people who wouldn't even know what it was. That is even if they could see it under your dog's longish hair!

I think it's fine,the only problem might be with a swastika (understandably) but a plain Iron Cross..... Nah. Tell'em Rommel is from Malta!

The current Luftwaffe use the 'iron cross' on their aircraft - but these days, it's called the Balkan Cross - so, no problem!

The modern Luftwaffe uses a revision of the WWII Balkenkreuz with flared arms reminiscent of the old WWI Iron Cross. Do they still call it a Balkenkreuz? Maybe one of you modern chaps who builds things without fans on the front will know lol.

BTW Balkenkreuz doesn't translate as Balkan Cross.

lol...Richard, we got them both at the same time and they where going to be called Spit and biff (spitfire and bf109) , my daughters wanted them to be called Brinks and Mat....

You can't change history by banning historical symbols. I know there are people who hate the RAF roundel as well as those who hate the Iron Cross, so what are you going to do? Ban them all? Or just the ones you don't like? And wasn't THAT the idea we were supposed to have defeated in that conflict?

It's a kind and thoughtful gesture from your friend. Let them wear their tags Ray.

...this has just reminded me of a program on TV I happened to fall upon some time ago. The program was a documentary on US dog shows and this couple had dressed their 2 dogs up as WW1 biplanes, complete with iron crosses, roundels the lot! Now if taste had anything to do with it then you've no problems with yer dog tags!

Taken on board all your comments and just had the dogs round the park with their tags on, so thanks for the confidence guys.Im sure someone will make a comment sooner or later, but bugger them I will let the dogs do the talking...after all its them that are wearing them not me...lol

I for one think its a ripping good idea! I say let them wear their tags and if people dont like it just point out that; "it is a GERMAN shepard, what do you expect the Victoria cross?"

My farther had a black lab when he was young. I wont say what it was called, but you would never get away with it these days....
