Welcome to my entry in this Group Build. Its Heller’s 1/24 Renault 8 Gordini; a kit dating back to 1968 according to Scalemates.

The Renault 8 was launched in 1962 - the same year as me funnily enough – and was a rear-engined, four doored family car, initially sporting a 956cc four cylinder engine having a mere 43hp. The sporting Gordini version was first produced in 1964 with a tuned 1108cc engine producing 89hp. In 1967, the Gordini was updated with a new four-lamp front panel and a 1255cc engine that gave a useful 99hp and earned the car some motorsport success, particularly in rallying. It is this later version which is replicated in the kit. Production ceased in France in 1973 although the model continued to be produced until 1976 for some markets.

I can remember travelling in the basic version of one of these cars when it was owned by the father of a school friend of mine. Later, a fellow apprentice motor mechanic had one as a first car and the college we attended had an example of the four-cylinder wet-liner engine for us to tinker with. I remember it being quite a fun little car for its time. My interest was re-kindled during a road trip in France in 2016. At a small hotel in the Vercors region where I was staying, there was an old black and white photograph showing rally cars lined up outside. The quirkiest of which was the R8 Gordini.

As mentioned above, the kit dates from 1968 and I purchased it around the end of 2018. This Group Build is a great opportunity to finally get it built. And this is what we have to play with:

Box art shows an example taking part in the 1967 Monte Carlo Rally. This example is not however included on the decal sheet!

The instructions look nice and clear..

The decals. I will probably go for the number 41 Tour de Corse car. Having enjoyed the roads of Corsica a couple of times, I feel a bit of a connection to it.

Box is somewhat over-sized for the little Renault...

Some more of that lurid blue plastic..
20240301_130504.jpg

And some in grey – moulding looks quite crisp...

The chromed parts will be stripped. Some will need a bit of a tidy up and those side trims could prove tricky...

And then there’s this...

Ok, fair enough for the tyres and maybe even the seats won’t be too bad, but exhaust headers and control pedals? We shall see...

Gotta have the right colour!

Not quite sure when I'll get to make a start - apparently we're on Grandparenting duty this weekend.... :rolling:.

I'm old enough to remember the Gordini. That blue plastic sure is blue! God knows what you're supposed to do with the "black" sprue.
I enjoy watching this drive you mad :smiling:

That's a blast from the past Nick! But you gotta love the blue plastic....

No progress on my build this weekend and I know it's not a racer, but......20240601_151916.jpg

Managed to make a bit of a start....

Rear body panel has been glued in place and reinforced with some sprue goo...

20240603_152643.jpg

These horrible ejector towers have been removed from the inner wheel arches...

20240602_173958.jpg

Much nicer...

20240602_175030.jpg

And these plus a couple of other parts have been fixed to the floorpan...

20240603_155826.jpg

Basic engine and transmission components have been put together - more clean up required here...

20240603_152800.jpg

And just when a bit of progress is being made, we have this: These couple of bits masquerading as liquorice sticks are what has been provided for the roll cage...

20240603_152550.jpg

I shall attempt to construct something a little more convincing!

That's probably it for this week. Back to work for the next few days and then a 500 mile round trip to visit our daughter at the weekend....

Thanks for looking in!

Nick.

Great progress Nick, I'm sure you will be able to bend the roll cage to your will. :smiling2:

Well, apologies for having gone awol for so long. Anyway, I have been doing some work on the Renault and that roll cage was the first thing to tackle. I set to with some brass rod...

First go at images on the new forum, and doing this from my phone so hope it's alright.

Next up were the foot controls - these were also on that rubbery sprue...

I fashioned some replacements from scrap and we ended up with this..

Next up, I'll be trying to improve the engine bay a little bit..

Thanks for looking in.

Moving on to the engine bay, I opened up the end of the air intake which was solid....

20240803_142357.jpg

I then went ahead and added some HT leads from copper wire with fine aluminium tube for the fittings. I also added a bit of detail to the oil filler cap...

20240803_155709.jpg

And I added a rudimentary coil onto the bulkhead so I had something to attach the main HT lead to....

20240809_155318.jpg

The ends of the tailpipes were also drilled out a little and I thinned down the fan blades in an attempt to make them look a little more in scale...

Thanks for looking in...

So the next area for attention was the door cards. As they come these are pretty poor.....

20240831_124714.jpg

The filled holes are where the rubbery roll cage was meant to attach. After looking for some online images, I progressed to this...

20240831_160237.jpg

The mouldings towards the top of the door card are meant to be pull straps to shut the doors. I inserted a couple of loops of copper wire and fixed some bits of photo etch to attempt a more realistic look and used scrap sprue to make a better arm rest and a knob for the window handle.

Then it was time to get on with some painting, after which the engine was installed.....

20240916_155455.jpg
20240916_155515.jpg

The exhaust downpipes were also on the 'rubber' sprue. They were glued in place on the cylinder head before the engine was installed, then after installation they were manipulated onto their respective attachment points on the silencer and then painted once in their final positions.

The bottom half all built up....

20240921_084414.jpg

The 'rubber' seats just had a bit of grey dry-brushing to make them less monotone. I bought some scale checker-plate after seeing this on a real example and it looks kind of ok here. The rear bulkhead/radiator mount needed modifying as there is no provision for the air intake to poke through it on the kit item. I spent a very long time trying to work out something for the seatbelts, but no pictures I found had either similar seats or roll cage. In the end and after a couple of abortive attempts I'm going with no seatbelts!

Now its onto the body. Thanks as always for looking in.

Nick
