There's absolutely no reason to feel guilty or apologetic about the number of kits in your stash! Like any hobby, it can be difficult for other people to understand............................ I could never grasp the concept of collecting stamps, or Pokemon cards!, but that's just my take. As long as it doesn't interfere with, or take over your normal life, and your financial state is OK with it, then why should you be ashamed?
I don't mention it to my friends down the pub ( they know I make models ), but I would rather keep some things to myself! :tongue-out3:

I feel utterly vindicated now - not including boxes of figures (about 60) - only 14! BUT, my wife has a whole room of different size, weights and colours of yarn (Floor to ceiling!) categorised by all sorts of criteria! In that respect I am a rank amateur! :tears-of-joy:

Well, it would be easier for me to take a pick than try and count them,also,as has been said,do you just include AFVs, figures,Dio sets, accessories sets?.... It's a hill of beans really.
I'm with Dave and Tim mind, DON'T feel guilty of whatever you've amassed,or not! AND flitting around due to the "Shiny" syndrome is totally acceptable,(but I would say that wouldn't I ?!

I no longer smoke, don't go out much,and basically work 5/6 days a week for an average 9 HR day...
..... So WHY shouldn't I buy kits too regularly,that I'll probably never get to build....
..... It's my main interest outside of real life... And I love just looking at the boxes sometimes!!!

...As a youngun i made LOADSA kits,mostly planes back then,and just stopped when i discovered music/girls.... so i`d say i`ve more,"Rediscovered" the hobby,than "Making up" for it!:thumb2:

Apart from boxes of accessories and figures I only have two or three kits and one of those is the one I'm working on at the time. I amalso not clever enough to have more than one on the go at a time.
I used to maintain around 200 kits in my stash and had intended to sell off at least half of them in 2020 leaving 100 or so. Then I caught Covid-19 and all thoughts of selling went out the window although strangely I got the buying bug really bad and doubled my stash. "I tell yer guv, it was that Covid-19 wot did it!"
What this means is that I now have 443 kits in my stash, many of them are rare ones that won't be made but sold in the distant future for loadsa money (he hopes).

Well looking at it that way think I might well just buy when I want and what I fancy kit wise. Like you I don't drink, go out and have as much time between gardening and modelling as I want .:thumb2::thumb2::thumb2::nerd:
I don't drink, smoke, gamble (except the lotto occasionally) and the only vices are modelling, books and DVDs. I live on my own (although my partner, Aileen, of 8 years lives 60 miles away in her own home) and I am free to spend my money how I like. Same with her although she overdoses on crafting supplies! If we did live together both of our collections would have to be managed a bit better but that would open an even bigger can of worms than just having a big stash.

I have to add to the comments I made last August as I am now fully retired and as expected on a final and lower income.
I "stopped" buying on 1st April 2021, and it wasn't an April Fools joke.
I only bid on E-bay at ridiculously low ball bids on items that I think will be interesting/useful/different and have still added a further 20 kits to the stash.
I use Scalemates to track the stash, to minimise the duplication, which works most/some of the time!
As we are currently going through a serious shortage of plastic for manufacturers and serious distribution problems, the intrinsic value of the stash has risen, but it all depends on how much someones the kit you sell and if there are 2 bidders it can be silly prices.
I feel more a collector than a builder but that will no doubt change once I have moved house and get to finally retire for real once we have settled.

I know I wont build them all, or even 1/2, but they are an excellent investment to use against all the consumables the hobby requires.
C-19, has cancelled all my share dividends and locked my pension pot, so my only hobby fluidity is the plastic investment in the attic, and whilst I keep working from home, until I can retire for real, its a real buzz to get a great deal, even if you only bought it as an investment.

I’m just glad no one asked about records/CDs or books…….I have well north of four figures in the former, and did have in the latter until after I moved and gave away several hundred to local charity shops….it’s the one area I really can’t resist a bargain.
In all honesty, I think modelling develops a type of obsessive kleptomania in its participants……we must regularly locate a steal of a bargain to fulfil our needs….either that or we all have well developed, but warped, “Hunter gatherer” instincts :thinking:

Collecting anything probably is a result of brains wired for gathering food when/if it’s available, I’d say. It serves no survival purpose in a society where you can get all the food you want any time you want it, so it gets turned into a different direction and you end up with people amassing large collections of stamps, comic books, ceramic elephants, CDs, cars, model kits, or whatever else happens to hold their interest.
According to my stash tracker on Scalemates (you need to be logged in there to see it), I have 385 kits — but this includes accessory sets, conversion kits, detailing sets and more as well as actual kits of a specific vehicle/plane/ship/etc. The list is probably also lacking a few items that I do have but didn’t remember when I compiled it about a year and a half ago. If I set it to “full kits” it says 147, but again, that includes sets of figures, weapons etc. that I would consider not kits in their own right but to be used for others instead.
I may have to go and actually count in the loft …

I think it says a lot that more of us feel embarrassed about our stash rather than proud of it, but in today's society where so much is superficial and use- once, show on social media and throw away/ move onto the next thing, I think we have little to worry about....
At least we can visit the forum and not be made to feel a bit odd... :smiling:

I think something that has been overlooked in all this is perhaps the human need to be creative, as well as a tendency to have variety in one's creative efforts..........add that to what's already been said about "hunting" and "gathering" and you have the perfect definition of "STASH" :thumb2: Rick H.
