Oh No...............................

Just an update....................... This flare up has been the worst I've had, It's gotten better, then worse - I've had days when I really thought it was dying away, only for it to return. However the past week has seen a vast improvement.................. This has been such a lengthly period, that I'm almost afraid to use my right hand, for fear of causing a relapse. I have a stress ball that I use for short periods every day.. My GP reckons that as I get older I may have longer periods of this - happy thought!

Might be worth getting your GP to refer you to hand physiotherapy Dave. Just in case you are unaware, it’s a specialist branch that is dedicated solely to hand issues. I was referred because some of the joint issues I suffer can be made worse by weakening of the muscles, which of course gets worse in a flair because lack of use makes the muscles weaker still. This may be at the root of your problem.

I was referred by my rheumatology physiotherapist. Since I’ve been going (two months, three visits) my hands have improved no end. In two months I’ve doubled my grip strength, got rid of repeated pain in the wrist joints, and recovered full mobility in the hand joints. I’m now only going to be checked every six months, so it is not too onerous. I’ve also been supplied with wrist and thumb supports for when they are necessary, arthritis gloves to help with inflammation, and exercise aids to enable me to carry out the routines necessary to keep my hands fit. Might be worth asking?

A feeling of cautious optimism - my hand is a bit stiff, but I don't have any aches or pains & I haven't had any painkillers for five days! :thumb2:
I can squeeze my stress ball without any discomfort - a real improvement. I'm going to take it easy for a while, no drilling, sawing or anything that could cause irritation. I may attempt a bit of figure painting as a bit of mild therapy.
I have to admit that I was getting a little nervous that this was going to linger on and on & I was getting discouraged, but fingers crossed ( I can do that now! )................

Good to hear this Dave. I do hope it will finally pass and you can get back to doing what you love to do, without any relapse. Take care and easy Sir.....

Good on you Dave, keep working with the hands. I find my spring loaded gripper works wonders in my ability to keep my digits limber and flexible enough to do what is required of them..... ;)
