I think I started this glue issue. My tube was split at the base and consequently had gone thick, almost like treacle. I have just posted on my Vampire build thread that I have sourced a new tube, still terrible but useable. I will stick with it.

No offence intended Peter and I certainly don't want to start a heated discussion, but don't these rule modifications rather spoil the idea of the 'Starter Kits'?

I do have a little confession I found my glue quite user friendly and having completed construction I have glue to spare.
 
It would seem that an overall colour is proving very difficult to achieve - not just because the size of the brush, but the poor covering of the paint. It makes you wonder if anyone at Airfix has actually attempted to use their 'starter sets'. I would think that quite a few beginners trying one of these could end up disappointed! I don't think that any of the camouflaged offerings would have this problem.
I've found the glue pretty good, more smell than my normal stuff, but grips well.

At one time I would have recommended a starter kit for a beginner, but by my own experience, and seeing the problems other experienced modellers are having, I've changed my mind.
Nothing wrong with the models ( mostly ), it's the paints, these little Airfix/Humbrol pots are very poor, coverage and consistency is not what you would expect. I don't think it matters what sort of brush you apply it with!
I have a Revell starter kit - but that is hampered by not having any black or yellow paint - the boxart showing the black anti-glare panel, and the yellow tail. The model in this case is ancient dating back to the 60's, so I'll give this a miss ( just as well I didn't pay too much for it! ).
This GB has been educational to me - it has clarified what are the minimum basic tools that you would need to make a satisfactory simple model!

i think there are two kinds of people who buy starter kits....those who want to try but dont know any better, get disheartened and never try again.................and us, who do know better, buy the kits when they are cheap (like in lidl sales for example) bin the paint/glue and use better

i think the problem with the paint is not the paint it self but the pots it comes in.....i seem to get it everywhere when i try to open or close one.....the paint needs an undercoat i think, im finiding the first coat is acting as one, then the 2nd coat goes on better
 
Dave, I generally agree about the paints, but I think the Sky in the Spitfire kit would be fine if used in an airbrush or with a wide flat brush. The first model I finished when I returned to the hobby was a Me109 starter set, which I painted with the included paints, using a cheapo Chinese airbrush and compressor from John at SMS, and it didn't seem too bad. After my not so brilliant airfix starting set I have plumped for a Revell model set and here's the victim and I hope that the paints are better.20190410_114605.jpg
 
Right I'm a little late but found myself on Ebay after seeing this thread and saw this kit.

Notes in advance:
1) I have a terrible track record for finishing models the last couple of years, life's a little busy, so the idea of just doing one as a starter set appeals as I can't try to over complicate things
2) I enjoy models of less common planes so this really caught my imagination
3) Not wanting to cause trouble before I even start but clearly there's a #gluegate issue, the original glue is MIA, but the seller very generously taped a tube of standard humbrol glue to the box, which is what would have been in there at first I think, so hopefully I can get a pass on that one.

Thankfully the original quality paints and brushes remain.

One of my favourite planes Jambo.....the moulds for this kit may well be fifty years old ....seem to remember it building up OK as a nipper though....

Good luck. You are one of the few with two brushes :smiling: All tube glue is equally horrible so go for it!

As Ian has suggested I will agree to extend this group build so that everyone can build a starter set kit with all the bells and whistles and everything you can possibly throw at it.
 
Sounds like a plan. Couple of questions please.
Are we just extending the scope of the GB to include building with all the tools etc or are we extending the time it will run for?
Is the rule _ same kit, no PE or resin am stuff but any tools, pills and potions are ok?
I have just ordered another Vampire.
