I know we all regard typing words in capitals as rude and unnecessary, but on this occasion I feel justified in high lighting the title......

Like half of the U.K., we went away for Easter. Prior to our leaving home, we did all the usual....Water off, gas off, appliances unplugged etc. I went up into my den to unplug the network router and smelt the faint whiff of burning. I had a cursory glance around and thinking it was timber being burned in the nearby woods, came down stairs and locked the house. I noticed there was no smell outside, so went back up to my den.....

Having a proper look, I found the magnifying glass had somehow swivelled around on it's stand and the sun had caught it and was burning a small hole in a piece of tissue which was on my bench. When I turned the tissue over, I was horrified to find a 10p size of red hot tissue underneath. I gave it a gentle blow and it burst into flames.......

Had I not gone back indoors for another look, my property would have, without question been destroyed!

"That wouldn't happen to me, I'm not so daft." I hear someone say. Perhaps so, but please check your work area, and keep magnifying glasses, specs, even empty glass jam jars and the like, in a drawer.

Cheers,

Ron

Cheers Ron for the heads up as my mancave is in the loft this could well apply to me good job you went back when you did we do have three fire extinguishers in the house and numerous fire and carbon alarms but these are of no use when you are not at home regards John

That is a coincidence Ron. My Brother In Law's house was half burnt down a month ago.

Fire people deducted that a glass type ornament on the window cill acted as a magnifying glass and set alight clothing in the middle of the room. Sun was low in the winter and caught it at the right angle and early in the morning.

Tragic as he had lost his wife a month before and the fire occurred in their bedroom. He was away but his grandson was living there and had to be rescued by gardeners working in the garden thankfully.

So moral is obvious.

Thanks for that Ron I do my work in the conservatory so i could probably be at more risk of this happening

So cheers I appreciate the warning

Close call Ron, glad all is well :D

Glad to hear you caught it just in time matey , a valuable reminder for everyone! cheers tony

God you were lucky, I remember a few years ago we were on holiday in a b & b up north and a couple of hoses up from us the brick wall of the bathroom exploded and completely fell out into the road. It even got on the news apparently a hairspray can had got hot in the sun and that had exploded its lucky no one was hurt after that I always make sure not to put any pressurized cans of any type anywhere near a window, now there's another thing I will have to check on. Luckily I am the only one with a magnifying glass.

glad to hear all,s well, and lucky you when back in, someone looking over your shoulder,

and you never thing of some think like that happening,

Thanks for the heads-up Ron, glad you caught things in time !
