I was having a browse on E-bay and came across something really odd, I think so anyway.

AIRFIX-VINTAGE 1.32 DENNIS FIRE ENGINE-EMPTY BOX ONLY | eBay

Do people really pay good money for empty model boxes? Seems like madness to me.

Tony.

Yes theres some strange people out there who collect kits but dont ever intend to build them (unlike most of us ,who intend to build our stashes , even if it never happens!!!LOL!!) I can see the attraction in collecting the artwork but empty boxes , beyond me. cheers tony

Well an Airfix Dennis fire engine with no box will go for under a tenner, with a bad box for under twenty. With a good box up to 50.

Collectors want the best, be it boxes of plastic bits, postage stamps or Dinky Cars. (which sell for a fortune if boxed, but can be given away with out one).

At least he was proclaiming that it was just the empty box.

Some 'collector' might have this kit in a damaged box.So this might appeal to them.Personally I buy models because I intend building them.Last year I sold about 20 1/72nd kits to a work colleague as these days i only build 1/48.Some old Revell, Frog and Matchbox kits.Dont see the point in hoarding stuff I'm never going to build.

Someone was selling Matchbox model boxes on a site here in NZ recently, like you lot I can't see the point unless you were a collector and not a builder. As for stashes not to be built, it's probably a bit like buying books that you read once then never touch again but you just have to have them. We've all done that. Ancient or not, my kits are bought to be built. Someday...

As the saying goes "it takes all sorts" to make the world go around..

Each to their own...

yup, flew into the hobby with a bang and still have about 7 kits to build after the one I'm busy with and 4 completed. Had to stop buying realizing I build much slower than I buy. I've now drawn the line and will not buy any more until I'm busy with the last in the stash. I try to keep up to date with the models being released and what's in the shop, so that I'll be Johnny on the spot when I buy a new one. That's not to say I don't drool at the models when I'm in the shop buying paint and stuff :)

I agree he must be a collector but what I do find strange is people who but kits not to build them, ive been told buy the wife that I cant have no more than two kits to be built ant one time I had about for to be built lol , I have two kits too be built and i'm half way through a HMS Victory.

Alan, your quote about fish reminds me about a similar one:

"If you build a fire for a man, you'll keep him warm for a day. If you set him on fire, you'll keep him warm for the rest of his life"
