This is going together very well. Negligible flash, parts fit perfectly, hardly any filling needed. The model, being 1:16 scale, is satisfyingly big. The engine block cover will be finished in Alclad 2 High Shine, and also the iconic radiator finished by Revell in chrome like many other parts but the radiator is not perfect. bluriusz modelled this kit in December 2012 and it looked really good.

Here are 6 photos of what’s in the box and 4 of progress so far.

Note that the front wheels can be steered. The engine is well detailed, the most fiddly part being the two sets of yellow ignition leads. Revell supplied thin yellow insulated electrical wire but it was very floppy and difficult to keep straight between bends, so I used 22 gauge (0.643 mm diameter) copper wire from a floristry supplier and painted it yellow. Cars at that time had two spark plugs per cylinder, for reliability, one fed by a magneto and the other by a coil. Both devices are modelled. The engine of the original had 7 litres and its petrol consumption would have been about 12 MPG!

An identical car is for sale by The Real Car Co. for £135,000, repainted and the engine overhauled. My model will be in black for the mudguards and the top of the bonnet and British Racing Green for the sides.

Very clean paintwork Steve, great start should look superb with your attention to detail.

One thing I have noticed is that the top of the doors has a walnut finish, is there decals for this?

Been considering one of these classic cars from Revell. Looking at this it might just happen one day...

No. The instrument panel is also shown with walnut veneer. The instructions state to paint this Revell "Wood Brown", 36382. The box illustration is misleading! I have collected some images from the Internet of burr walnut and will print these (after any scaling) and stick to the surfaces. Or perhaps use one to print a decal using inkjet decal paper. I would go for picture nr.2 printed onto decal film then a good gloss varnish ! nice.

Revell no longer list the Phantom, nor any vintage classic car kits.

I can't find any models by Revell of vintage classic cars. Airfix do a 1939 Bentley Deluxe at 1:12 (£99 !), and do or did a 1948 MG sport at 1:16 but its not in their on-line catalogue (but is on the site of http://www.megahobby.com) That's quite a site, by the way.

Have you found any vintage pre-war II classic car kits (not racing cars)?
 
I see, yes a bit misleading. As Ian points out the Walnut Burr should look great when you have rescaled and added it.

Nice starter to the Roller. I think this will be an interesting build and the finished article will be stunning.

I suppose a '34 Rolls could even be used in a WW2 setting. Anyone know of a 1/16 Churchill figure?!

Ps. You can buy 'off the shelf' wood veneer decals, they're used quite often in WW1 aircraft. Not sure you can buy Walnut though. Another method is to replicate the pattern with oil paint streaked over water based paint and then sealed with gloss varnish - this works very well.

I have had my eyes on this kit for awhile, will follow this build closely.

At first glance I thought that was a six inch rule alongside the body thinking it was small then I counted all the inches and saw it will be over a foot long.

Then I saw the quality of the engine and chassis

and then I thought mmmmm this is gonna be good:)

I was tempted by the ebay Ford Model T (used) but was put off by the fact thatthe seller gave no details about it. Therefore it might be missing parts etc. I have now bought the same kit, new, from thetserviceltd on ebay, for £36 compared to Amazon for £35 + postage, and £54 somewhere else.)

Better get it soon. Revell don't list it in their catalogue any more and it is difficult to find. Try ebay.
