Revell 1/96 Cutty Sark

Hi all.

Looks like I'll be back on this soon.

Some advice please. These bits (climby rope things for the masts) just have a matt black for the painting instructions.

I don't have the patience to make my own from fibre, so how would you paint these to make them look a little less 'painted black plasticky'? Any ideas?

Hi Andrew, the rat lines, the ones that go from top to bottom are black ( they are/ were covered in tar ), and the thinner ropes that go from left to right are normal rope colour.

Try one of the game washes Bobby. I use Vallejo games washes a lot. They are formulated for this type of work and flow very well. You would be able to basically splash it all over like Henry.....and it will flow into creases etc. Any excess where you don’t want it can be removed with a damp brush before it dries....
Thank you, I'm going for this. I'll try on one of the many and see how I do. No point in being lazy now I've put so much effort in.

Or these

Perfect, thank you! They don't look much like the kit pieces - I'll improvise and adapt.

One thing I found in the house earlier, some black waxed linen thread looks like it will do quite well for the tarred black lines.

Those bottom bits are a bit meh on the model, so I've played around.

There's about 2mm of paint on this now. Almost happy with it, might just make the ratlines a little lighter, and tidy it up a bit.

So I went with a mix of your ideas, and I thank you for them.

And so, rigging in earnest about to begin. Through tiny tiny little holes with massive massive sausage fingers.

Here's the state of play before I do. Lotus 78 shown not to scale.

Thank you all.

Nearly done! Forestays, bow stays, bit in between fore and bow stays done. Instructions rubbish, so I made it up. It's not like it's going to go to sea.

Laddery things and then sail pulleys to do, a few decals and the nameplate and that's it done.

Very nice Andrew.
Looking the part, for sure.
After looking at Pete's posted Cutty Sark rigging pictures, and reading your own latest post, it's good to see you are using your own version of my much acclaimed R5 method.;)

Andrew

Don't forget the Back stays, and then you have the Tacks and Braces as well as the Lifts. BTW Pete there is only one "rope" on a ship and that is attached to the bell clapper.
