discussion Should I give up modeling

Hi all I've just come across this http://www.timelinesforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=12668 what a piece of art, so many techniques involved here figures, vehicles dioramas, weathering, it is a truly stunning piece of art, my pathetic attempts fall so short of this, it is truly exceptional IMHO wow.

That's excellent work there but it is a large scale so it's really a case of getting the washes and detail right and you'd soon be able to learn that don't forget the larger the model the more detail is possible


Those figures are about 3/4 inches tall so the detail on the figures are better

thing is i would get bored.......that one dio must have took him months and months to do.....i hate it when things take too long cos i get bored and want to do something else, but i cant leave something to come back to it later

Think I'm gonna start selling all my stash ( but Alan is right they are bigger figures not 1/35 or 1/48 they big so painting easier and detailing although hard. ( I'm still learning so this is Alan's territory

My models are never great but I enjoy building them and for me that's all that matters. I do like to see others efforts though and even if I cant match it I will still enjoy my next build.

Its a womderful bit of art, but thats EXACTLY what inspires me to do modelling.


If that bloke can do it, then surely with time, patience and learning, anything is possible. Surley?


Oh hell, with a Bit of time, and some patience, i can make a total hash up of that which wouldnt be good enough to grace a cat litter tray. Yeah, im just off to my cloud to take a hot tub with jimmy Hendrix!

Even though it is 1/16 scale it's still one remarkable piece of work, I can't even begin to criticize this work but {here it comes} though his {or hers?} style and colors are spot on it does seem a bit 'clean' for lack of a better term. When constructing combat scenes a certain amount of grit, filth, ugly debris of war, hap-hazard placements and a look of spontaneous action imo could have been better portrayed a that larger scale, but again I still think it is one remarkable piece.............Jim

Sheesh! Everybody on this forum is capable of producing better work than me. Does that stop me or put me off? Hell no!


I do this modelling stuff 'cos I like it - not to be the best, or to show off better skills than others. Sure, I want to improve so I'll look at things like this to see what I can maybe learn. Just because I'll never be as good as that doesn't matter one tiny little bit!


Sorry guys, but talking of giving up just 'cos you've seen summat better than you've achieved so far is just plain daft!

Is a great diorama, certainly, excellent painted and built....but looks "typical" and not "personal"...isn't it?


Maybe they hasn't this high standard of quality, but I see more interesting and imaginative builds on our forum. With a personal style!!


So enjoy your modeling and create new things!!! Our hobby is more important than paint good faces and fine camouflages...

Despite the obvious amazing craftsmanship here, I find the figures look like caracatures, not real people! True, they have been rendered with enormous skill and patience, but for my money, that has never been the point - as I have probably mentioned before, I think that a certain amount of Impressionism adds enormously to the overall realism of a diorama. For this reason, give me one of Grumpa's dios any day! I've had this discourse with art students for the past 30 years, some folks think photo-realism is the ultimate goal in painting, whereas others, myself firmly in this camp, prefer space to let our imagination fill in the reality. Great skills, but too clinical!


Oh, and I agree with Polux and Gern, it should never be a reason to give up

Its just a tank and some blokes , ive seen far better on here if im honest . Ok i cant paint figures to save my life so maybe im in no position to comment but the figures here look a bit overdone , the faces have too much tonal variation for me , a bit panto dame . There , ive said it , umbrella up ready for the oncoming s**tstorm.

Have to agree with Tony, its yet another WWII german dio, its very good but ive seen better on this site, just look at some of Monis work, and should be no reason for anyone to think about giving up, yes the make up and finish is good but theres no realism in it, ive been dirtier than them on exercise with the army for a few weeks, they look like they have just been issued with their uniforms.

Too many cameos in one place for my liking, it looks like its been planned for the viewer to do a 360 walk around it so that the viewer sees something and a face from each angle. Not saying it isn't good, it is certainly a work of art and as uncle fester said, it is very inspirational.


Thanks for sharing the link with us Ken, but don't give up on modelling, you have too many on the go to not be finished.

It's good, no question, but it's too sterile for me. There's no energy or sense of life in it.


I've seen better from Monica, Alan & many others on here.

I think all of us here constantly strive to improve our work, that is why we start the next kit to try and do better.


The day I achieve perfection is the day I give up modelling. Mind you, I think that will not be happening any time soon

I was going to say what an amazing piece of work that is........ and then on closer inspection I noticed that there wasn't` a speck of dirt under any of the finger nails....... Lets it down terribly.
