So this is my second model since picking up the tools again and there's been a few minor disasters along the way but this is where I've got to:

An engine that required a lot of work to remove the flash

The fuselage with a heavily rebuilt nose after it was involved in a collision with a bottle of Peroni while the glue was setting

The wings and floats are coming together, despite the fact I forgot to drill the hoes for fixing the float before gluing up the wing, I fixed this by making a template from the right one and drilling from the outside, by some miracle the float fits.

I've chosen to model it with one wing folded, this may have been over ambitious but we'll see. It's been a steep re-learning curve and the build quality is improving as I go and learn from my mistakes, although my poor modelling skills are still better than my photography skills. I still can't scribe freehand so have invested in some templates from John, the aerial is now the third one I've made and stuck back on :rolling:.

I'm still confused by clear parts, is perceived wisdom for wingtip lights to paint the rear and leave the fronts clear? I think this is what I used to do. The three part canopy pieces look like a nightmare in waiting.

Is this the 1/32 scale kit that’s also the subject of another thread on this forum? It’s certainly looking like you’re not really all that much out of practice

It is the 1/32 and I'm grateful to @Vaughan for the inspiration to add some detail to the breather pipes although I used pipe gauze. It was combination of that thread and John's little note about the shop after ordering from amazon that led me here.

The thing about returning is you're always comparing to what you used to be able to do and it's 25 years since I built an aeroplane, the last few years of my modelling previously were spent on Games Workshop miniatures, a very different thing to this.

Looks like you're doing a fine job. Sounds as if you are learning all the time and enjoying yourself. That really sums up the hobby.

Si your doing a great job looks like you haven't lost any of your modelling skills over the last 25 years. Keep the good work up. The canopy is a bit of a pig to do, you have to take your time. I used the fuselage to line up the sections which worked for me. I can't remember which glue I used it was either Revell canopy glue or Zap formula 560 canopy glue.

That's really useful. I have dry fitted the folded wing and could feel the slight play and was wondering if it was normal or I'd messed up and how I'd secure it during setting, so thank you for the solution.

I've also had a look at the decal map for that wing and it appears the decal covers the hole for the bracing rod. I don't fancy getting poly anywhere near decals so I'll have a look at shifting the decal one way or the other. My plan is to build it as a series of sub-assemblies and put it together at the last minute, the fit on the wings is good enough that I think I'll get away with this.

Progress is going to be slow, I don't own an airbrush (yet) and there's a lot of plastic to cover with a hairystick, it's going to be a real challenge not to leave brush marks in the metallic paint on the floats. I'm in two minds about the the finish on the tail, I may just paint the red in and leave the white circle off, not sure that I'll build so many German WWII models that it's worth investing in a sheet of swastikas, Mrs S also has strong opinions on swastikas and I know a lost battle when I see one.
