looks like your on a roll and it’s flying together....oh tracks:tired:
Ever tried AFV club workable tracks? I just used a set for my tiger I build and found them easy to assemble.

Love the Zimm effect....does it gets smelly with all the melting plastic?

Si - yes, tracks my nemesis. Not tried AFV ones yet. Done some Bronco workable, they drove me right round the bend and back again

No smell with the zim - it only melts, doesn’t burn

Morning Ian x 2 - have done it this way before in the past and it usually looks ok. Because it is hand drawn you get a bit more raggedy finish than using such things as etch or resin sheets (that’s my excuse for not being able to draw straight)

It’s the way many (especially British) modelling books and articles from the 1970s and 80s would recommend to make Zimmerit.

Well I am disappointed Mr T. I send you the original recipe for Zim using glue,water and sawdust and then you cast it aside for a bit of melted plastic! LOL

That zimm does look good. I've not seen it done directly into the plastic. Usually some kind of putty is spread on and then the pattern impressed. Your melty method is effective.

I have also seen this done on a 1/72 scale tiger with Testors liquid cement and a very thin, narrow screwdriver. Very effective method if you can't afford one of those fancy wood burner rigs:smiling5:.

Ahhh the old pyro whatsit were old enough to remember Historex kits ,Max thingy Ray Lamb always on the cover of MM ,horses mains ,tails ,saddle sheep skins ,bear skins, shako plumes all in 54mm and that strange white plastic..?.....

Steve - I will need the real thing for the big tigger when I eventually get around to it

Jim - it works quite well up to 35th scale

Rick - the pyrogravure was a purpose made tool not a wood burner

John - not hot enough for you as it melts not burns

David - oh yes, they were all the rage back in the day

Still think the pyrogravure does the best zimm.Mine got a bent tip and went missing years ago but still miss those many hours better spent in the pub.Same model too.

Hi Jon - still a useful tool. Nearest thing today is the Rai-Ro from Germany - has a variable temperature range which is better as it should be adjustable to take account of different plastics hardness


this turned up today from McKeeman Models who specialise in small scale stuff so I shall be attempting a double Sturm build - comes pre-zimmed and with link and length tracks

No internals and hatches are moulded shut

This one will end up abandoned at the side of the road as per the commonly seen photos

For the 35th one I have bought the Tamiya maintenance and ammo loading crews from SMS - the maintenance set provides a basic engine :thumb2:
