Are the SMER kits any good ......... Or are they just East German / Soviet tosh ???? ....... I rather fancy the Alfa Romeo kit ........ But if they are rubbish then I won't bother.

I have a 1/72 hurricane Mk IIc and a 148 Supermarine walrus in the stash , they look pretty basic kits but ive been told they do make up into nice models
 
Peter hang on !! Before you splash any cash you need to know that the SMER 1/32 Gp racers are VERY old moulds . SMER specialise in re-boxing other companies kits such as Frog , Merit , Heller , Artiplast etc A lot of these kits are quite old mouldings and therefore very basic compared to todays standards , the GP racers are old Merit moulds from the fifties i think so you would need some aftermarket wheels at the very least (solid wire spoked wheels dont look too good!) Best thing is to do a google search and look at a few builds to see what youre in for , cheers tony
 
Hi amos , masterbox make superb figure sets so I imagine this will be a good kit too , go for it but dont forget to show us when its done! cheers tony

Thanks Tony .......... I guess if they were made in the fifties then they were produced by the "Stasi" .......... and the moulds were designed in a tractor factory somewhere East of the Ural Mountains ......... I'll take your advice and do some research.

That looks cool ........... and I believe Masterbox also produce the rider and whatever the blokey is called in the sidecar ........ Do it !!!

Ok then....... Im off to make the other half a cup of tea, tell her she looks really pretty...... Then do a sneaky purchase, and wait for her to whinge " what do you need another for"...... " dont know my love, why do you have so much make up, when you dont need it"..... Smooth ;)

No its actually the opposite Peter , although SMER are Czech the majority of their kits are old moulds from this side of the iron curtain , Merit I beleive were British , as were Frog , Artiplast were Italian and Heller French . I think they might have made a few of their own but not many , for example if you ever see the Ilyushin IL2 Sturmovik Hi Tech boxing its a gem , recessed panel lines and a P.E. fret included all for about £8 (ive got one in the stash!) cheers tony

I've tried that approach too but the scowled still there ........ Why you bought another kit!!! You have that one already but when you try to explain it a different version all I get is huff huff but I never stop he buying new shoes etc

The Alfetta was originally a British kit made by Merit along with their Talbot Lago. Both are 1/24 scale with basic engine detail and were made in the early sixties. Merit made a range of 1/24 scale kerbside F1 and LM racers in the late fifties. The moulds were sold off to a toy manufacturer in Italy apart from the Alfa and Talbot Lago that were acquired by SMER. These two have since gone to another manufacturer. Both kits although a bit basic lend themselves to be super detailed by the more experienced modeller. I believe that Heller released a 1/24 scale Talbot Lago GP kit in the 1980's that is well detailed and not a repop of the old Merit kit.
