A while ago, in a moment of madness, I decided to build three 1/72 Hurricanes at once. The builds went fine until a flat varnish was applied to the two MkI Hurricanes. Something went wrong with the Tamiya TS80, the varnish bubbled whilst drying and even stripped some paint off one. I left them there in that state for two weeks, very disappointed that my hard work had been destroyed. Then a few days ago after reading the hate and love threads, I decided to try and save the situation. Carefully restoring the paint work and protecting the decals, followed by a new coat of flat TS80, and everything worked out. The MkII had no such issues, but waited until the varnish issue had be resolved. I wasn't risking a third victim. Here are the finished Hurricanes.

Airfix A2082A, the mount of FLTLT Ian Gleed at the time of the Battle of Britain. This is the Hurricane which lost some paint in the varnish episode:

Airfix 02042, Mk1 303 (Polish) SQN RAF, Battle of Britain. This one also suffered from the bubbling varnish, but suffered no major paint damage. A few touch ups and she was ready for another varnish and completion. The thin and rivet-pierced underside roundels are off the Academy MkIIC kit, as I was doing a bit of a kit bash.

Academy 2259, a MkIIC kit which is an absolute pleasure to build. I converted this one to MkIIB standard by converting the wings and filling in wing cannon holes. The rest is standard OOB, except the decals, of which some were from the Airfix 2042 kit. The bomb racks and bombs are from the Airfix kit.

Three beautiful little Huzza's flyjoe, great work! Glad you managed to salvage what sounded like a possible disaster. Will you be putting them into a dio?

Regards

Chris

Thanks very much Chris! Yes, a salvage job indeed. It was disappointing in the first place, and I just had to finish these things off. I don't have any plans for a dio at this stage. I'm actually running out of 'model display space allowance'. So I may have to start choosing favourites for display. I have thought about doing a refuelling/accident scene using the Airfix airfield sets. In the meantime I have a good number of old kits to do before I buy trucks and buildings.

They've turned out very nicely, Joe. A good rescue job too! I wouldnt have known if you hadn't said.

Keith

Nice one Joe and good save. Lovely machine the Hurricane and much under represented,so it's good to see you doing your bit to redress the balance with those little beauties.

Cheers

Thanks Keith! Cheers Steve, I have a soft spot for the Hurricane. I was particularly happy with the IIB model.

Fantastic builds joe ! Nice to see you rescued them too , you would never tell that you had any trouble. My fave is the first one ,(ironically ,the one that gave you the most grief!!) its really making me want to do a hurricane now!! cheers tony

Nice job. I'm not surprised the Academy went well, they really are great, especially at those prices.

Great feat Joe. Now what about another 5 ?

On Churchill's last visit to France before France capitulated in WW11 his Flamingo was protected by 8 Hurricanes. On the ground at the airfield in France the Hurricanes formed a semi circle around the Flamingo with their pilots beside their machines when Churchill arrived to return to Britain.

Flamingoes have not be produced in model form otherwise I would have liked to have participated in a diaorama to produce this scene not seen by many but must have been very emotional.

Tony, you should get into one after the Boomerang. You know you want to.

Thanks Colin, yes the Academy kits have impressed me. The only weak points were the decals and the too-erect windshield on the Hurricane.

Laurie, that would indeed be a very interesting scenario. My partner is studying to be a clinical psychologist. She is already concerned at my triple build :hipno:. I already had the restored Irish one, and I have two Revell Sea Hurricane IIC's in the stash ready to go. After the Academy IIC to IIB experiment I am thinking about using one and bashing it with the left over Airfix 40mm cannons to produce a IID version using the Revell tropical intake.

Thanks Joe. If any one knows where to get one of these models I am going to have a go at the Churchill diorama. Unfortunaetly the Gallery one they are asking £100.

I did a thorough search 6 months back & could not find one.
