Heres my under a fiver build for this year , a man on an oss , and it cost me £5. Its one of Airfixs excellent 54mm range and is a french bloke with a sword .My figure painting skills are basic to say the least but its good to get out of your comfort zone now and again . These airfix figures were beautifully tooled and go together with no problems , i used to love doing them as a kid . The kit includes a small rectangle of thin styrene sheet which is used for the various straps on the man and oss , there being a template on the instruction sheet to show the various sizes and widths. To be honest Dave , I'm really tempted to put the horses head on the man and vice versa , I reckon they would fit ok

Not a figure painter myself although I have tried a couple of times. Admire you for going outside your comfort zone. I'll watch with interest.

Well I thought Id better get started on my under a fiver build so heres where Im at . I thought this was going to be a fairly quick build , just thepaint being a bit tricky but its turning out to be quite involved . Ive made the 'oss and cut some of the plastic card strips for the various harness/straps etc, so hes ready for primer. Ive also made a start on the man although at this stage hes headless. The removal of mould lines on the parts is made easier by the soft white plastic that Airfix used to use for these kits .There are still a load of plastic strips to cut for the reins and stirrup straps etc but from now I think I'll have to start painting things seperately so these will go on later when it all comes together , cheers tonyView attachment 302582View attachment 302584

Cheers steve , it went together really well , these old Airfix 54mm kits are beautifully tooled, just a swipe of vallejo acrylic putty in the odd place. The majority of joints are cleverly placed so theyre covered anyway but in general the fit is excellent. Just hope i can do the fine detail justice with my flaky figure painting skills !:anguished::anguished: Cheers tony

You might find it easier to cut the straps from foil, fast food containers smoothed out and preferably empty, are great for this. It allows you to shape the straps more naturally than the plastic card. Great progress and yes, they are great kits if you have the eyesight which I don’t lol.

Good idea graham , i think i might use wine foil for the reins and harness as these would be too rigid in plastic card, only thing is where would i get some wine foil?:thinking::rolling::rolling::flushed::dizzy::dizzy::smiling5::smiling5:

Great to see this figure again. Ditch that plastic sheet!
Richard F. did a fantastic Scots Grey from this range a year or so ago.

Just a quickie to prove Ive not forgot about my french bloke , here he is minus tete , re enacting the final scene of Dr strangelove , and his oss has got a bit of colour on it too, theres loads more to paint and bits to add yet but at least hes coming along graduallyView attachment 303899View attachment 303900
