discussion Trial of Nigella leaves. Tales from the potting bench .

Percy Race here.


This not taken in our garden however it gives a good idea of what i'm trying.

Those leaves look as if they could prove useful in dios.So la couple of weeks ago I cut some off ours in the garden and did the glycerin treatment.


The large dark Rosemary cutting has been discarded, far too wide leaf to be in scale.




Now drying out on some kitchen roll , looks promising. Has that reed bed look to it.

I'm looking for something as a basis for the mustard/linseed crop for my WW1 Germans- do you think individual 'branchlets' would work with flowers attached to the ends?
They would need to be about 12-15mm long

I've put the figure in to give you as better idea.
How many do you think you would need, I could cut some more tomorrow and put them into the treatment and in a couple of weeks post them to you.

They seem to be dry(and I’m impatient), so I thought I would have a little play.

For those who haven't looked at my WWI Germans thread I'm going for this effect

The jury is out as to whether the crop is Mustard(yellow) or Linseed(Mauve) or Oilseed Rape(Yellow), so it may come down to which is easier to do.
I need a plant structure for the flowers so this is how we got here.

I picked a couple of sprigs and separated the ‘branchlets’

I mounted them on masking tape strips for spraying light green


Not too much as I want the natural variations in colour to show.

Next came the flowers. I’m planning to use foam texture that’s used for making model trees, and I have some in white. It comes from 4D Modelshop and we use it at work. I have it in my head (where from I have no idea)that it can be coloured with ink.


I hope it separates when it dries out…………….
Plan B is to find some foam that is already coloured and shred it with a cheese grater or coffee grinder.

The idea is that I carefully glue individual bits of foam on to the Nigella to represent the flowers. Fortunately the base is only 7cm square so it should only take me about a month!
We’ll see!

the foam is fine for size and texture if I can get it the right colour.
I might just go with white.......

Totally fantastic Neil and while the plants are drying, you can start painting those 100+ figures to complete the effect. Good luck Sir!!!

The texture had dried overnight, so I had another little play.

It wasn’t so tedious to do and the point is that the flowers are at varying heights. It’s not very accurate as mustard plants and I’m sure it wouldn’t satisfy the petal-counters , but I think it will do.
I decided to make 3 test bases, so I used perfect plastic putty and the nasty acrylic paint from a starter set

Then I can see them side by side against the uniforms and decide which I prefer.

Great job with the flowers and I agree with John they all look good. I have used foam to make flowers by just putting a piece of sponge in a cheap electric coffee grinder and mincing it up to the size required. It can then be coloured with acrylic fabric paints to any colour needed.
