As you can see I am not using masks, other than canopy masks for this one. I have found Kits World decals to be quite good and there is some great nose/tail art.

It looks a nice straight forward build but there is one discrepancy that I will live with, the kit is a short tail P40 while the decals is for a long tailed version.

My bench all cleaned up and ready.

Tomorrow I will open up and take a good look at the plastic.

Actually I unexpectedly sneaked back in to prep the kit while the Missus is watching a recording of a boring tv series, Faith, that she likes.

the surface detail looks good..

I made a start on the cockpit and first had a look at this new style of Eduard detailing set and it looks great.

The seatbelts are the steel type.

The resin i.p. Is superb.


The parts just break away easily and it takes just a few minutes to clean them up with a knife and some light sanding.

A little superglue and here it is next to the kit part. It is a simple part replacement.


A huge improvement compared to all alternatives, except perhaps the new 3D decals.

I started on the cockpit sub assemblies.

More progress

In test fitting I found that the prop has been designed to spin and to that end has a rather long shaft that ‘catches’ when inserted into its hole. This is because it was engineered to be fitted before the fuselage halves are joined. Naturally I don’t want to fit the prop until final fittings and don’t want it to spin. It therefore makes sense to take a razor saw to the shaft to shorten it so it does not ‘catch’ when inserted from the front.


The exhausts go together well, nice fit, no ugly joins to fill and sand. Individual one-piece stubs make life easier


As you can see they used slide moulding to good effect giving us nice hollow one piece exhausts

The intake comes as several pieces including etch and it all fits perfectly. Here it is with the tail wheel.

I am a bit concerned about the tail wheel leg though. It is very thin and vulnerable. I have been searching for a metal set for this kit without luck. There are1/32 metal legs for the earlier Trumpy P40’s and I nearly ordered a set but then I realised they are nothing like the F variant and won’t fit. I will have to see how I can protect it. Could be a problem.


I have primed the interior parts and a few other subs.

To be honest, a replacement tail wheel strut looks like something that should not be too difficult to solder together from bits of brass wire. (Of course, I have a habit of somewhat underestimating how difficult I find things to actually do )

I have dry brushed some metal powder inside the intake

After spraying interior green I applied a pin wash. I still have some details to paint on these though.

Here is the cockpit

The little bit of interior green on the resin does not match but it only shows under the flash. It is barely noticeable with the bare eye and once installed you won’t see the difference.

I have been working on the fuselage seams and while waiting for Mr Dissolved Putty to dry completed a couple of sub assemblies.

Issues at all.

Preparing to paint. Fixing the canopy into position and masking.

I have applied a black primer and it looks like there are just a couple of small seam areas that need attention.

I used my spreader cap for the second time so I have now worked out how to get the best out of it. It really does turn a fine airbrush into a spray gun that’s ideal for this purpose. I covered the model quickly with a thin smooth coat. If there is one available for you airbrush I recommend that you get one.
