Hi all.

Here's my next project:

Its a nice-looking kit & my first by Trumpeter. I do love Russian armour for the scope they give to weathering.

As well as the small amount of

PE, there is a turned aluminium barrel & separate link tracks. As my compressor has bit the dust, I'm stuck with rattle cans for this one, so thank god it's not a German late-war AFV!

Hi Patrick

That's a great subject for a model kit. The kit itself looks very detailed, judging by the sprue shots, and should build into a great armoured vehicle. Russian AFVs, although usually one colour, do give a good (and often big!) canvas for applying weathering techniques.

Looking forward to seeing this progress.

Thanks guys! Got a bit more done today-the kit is a good'un, goes together without any drama:

So after this will be the tracks. I'm going to assemble, paint & weather the lower hull in its entirety as once the fenders are on, it will be nigh-on impossible to fit or reach the upper tracks.

Well guys & gals, the next bit is every armour builder's favourite- link & length track! If you see the sprue shot, half the links have 6 sprue connections& tthe rest have 4. There's 12 of these sprues so its a lot of clipping & sanding for me!

3 hours of hard work have resulted in this lot!

Only 180 links there! So now it's on to getting them into lengths ready for gluing.

My technique is to stick a length of masking tape on the bench, add over this a length of double-sided tape & then another strip of masking tape with the sticky side up.

This method both keeps the strips from moving & allows the track links to be assembled tightly together, as in the pics:

This shows the strips with the track ready for positioning on the tape.

Here is the 2 lengths for one side. I add

extra thin cement & leave them for 15-20 minutes so the glue takes hold:

Next is to drape them over the wheels to get the desired sag effect

Leave them to set & then they can be painted.

Small update on this one!

The lower hull, wheels & tracks are done, just a matter of attaching them!

Sorry that the pictures aren't much good, I'm forced to use my phone's inadequate camera for now!

Mike, I put a basecoat of matt black on & then washes of burnt umber & burnt sienna oils over that, followed with a sludge wash of ground up pastels ( white, yellow & brown) .

Then I rubbed off the excess with an old stiff brush. Just remains to drybrush with a little gunmetal to give them a slight metallic sheen.

Thanks Ian! Separate link tracks often seem to put people off, but they're not so hard really! Personally, I hate wrestling with vinyl tracks.
