Scale Model Shop

Tworrs new studio/man cave/modelling room

As I had mentioned once before, I am having a new studio built in which the man of the house (me) gets to do the things HE wants without interference (he says hopefully) from other persons, who for reasons of safety (mine), shall remain anonymous.
The plan is to have an area for modelling and an area for art, and anything else that takes my fancy, it's my place after all ;)
Anyway, my builder mate who is doing the work made a start a couple of months ago, and as he is only able to fit my job in on a Saturday due to his day job, has been plodding on and we are starting to see progress now.
The main structure is now up, and the metal cladding and windows have been ordered, for which we wait very impatiently.
Size wise the room will be 6m x 2m with a deck outside for relaxing in contemplative times.
Obviously I am keen to get into my new space, but like with building models I have to be patient, and am only expecting to be in in the new year.
There won't be too many updates as progress is very slow, due to the nature of things, but I will give the occasional one.
I am not doing too much of anything myself while I get my various health issues sorted out.
Cheers
Garry

Looks long enough to have a scale model production line! And to a bunk in there for those long builds….Way to go! You can have a permanent fixture for your spray booth with extractor pipe. Winner!

If I had a set up like that I dare say Mrs W would move me in herself!!!!
Very nice Garry, don't mind me if I turn green with envy!!

There could be advantages to that as well Doug ;)
I have waited long enough for a space of my own, and now is the time for me to treat myself.

Nice.

We have 'easy' building regulations here too....lol.
We can build up to 50m2 in total without consent over the existing house. Problems start when people forget that they have a carport or garage, a tool shed and a greenhouse. Build a garden room or workshop of 49m2 and get hung by the council...'.but it's under the 59 square meter rule' they all proclaim. Then they learn that the existing buildings, house excluded, have to be added to the equation.
Then there are the just silly rules...
I have a bricks and block building that was once a stable/cow shed. Unfortunately in a bit of a state. The roof is more wormholes than wood, and some nasty cracks in the walls. Anyway...
If I pulled it down and build it up again with brick/blocks no problem. I can just do it.
If however I pulled it down and built it up in wood....nope I would need full planing!

Wow Garry, that is a really nice project you have going on!!! Lotsa space and work area to enjoy. I truly hope you get the med probs behind you and can play at your new bench very soon. I would love to have such a thing for myself, but with a sun deck, I'm afraid I'd spent too much time in a lounger, cold one in my hand, getting a tan in the sunshine!!! Surely wouldn't get anything done at the bench.........

As a first build, might I suggest you go with a nice 1/700 aircraft carrier Sir. You wouldn't want to mess up all that nice space, now would you???........

Prost

It is so interesting how building regs around the world differ Ian, and even within a single country how individual councils interpret the regs, but unfortunately we have to comply don't we?
When we bought our home it was what Kiwi's call a bach, which is another name for a beach shack, anyway when we wanted to refurb the place we asked the council for all existing plans and drawings etc, which is called a LIM report (Land Information Memorandum) and I was not surprised to see that there was only a hand drawn sketch of the outer walls, no details whatsoever, and the council said to get my builder to draw what was there and they would just approve it. Go figure. TBH I didn't bother.

More progress has been made, the metal cladding to the roof and side walls is on, and the first fix electrics are in.
The window and entrance sliding door have been ordered , but will only be ready at the end of January unfortunately.
Next is the insulation and interior cladding, which will be 12mm ply. Ply for two main reasons, one, we are in an earthquake zone, so structural integrity is paramount, and second, I want to be able to fix things to the walls wherever I want.

Insulation is going in, then the interior linings will follow. Underfloor was done in 75mm styrene.

There will indeed Ian, it's the white roll on the floor in the second pic.

Looking very nice Garry. I see you have a window at the end, no Sky light? Might help for the art work at least.

John

Thanks John, I decided against a skylight as that would let direct sunlight into the room which I wanted to avoid. The window is specifically South facing to let the natural light in without the glare, in the northern hemisphere you would want North light.
The art area is to be in front of the window to catch that natural light.
Then there will be 5500K LED strip lighting for the modelling area, which is as near to natural lighting as I can get.

Thanks Chris, no at this stage I haven't decided on the next model. I had an ultrasound done on my right shoulder this week and have identified a triple whammy, frozen shoulder, torn rotator cuff and to add to that bursitis, so for the foreseeable future I'm pretty much on light duty due to the pain, and I have very restricted arm movement. Now the left shoulder is playing up as well, probably due to me using it more now.
Apart from that we are good, Sharon has started her holiday now, so that is good as well.
ATB to you and Jen.

Sorry for the lack of updates.
Good progress has been made though and I'm on the home straight now.
I don't have sufficient floor tiles left over from previous jobs, so the hunt is on to find another matching box to complete the floor. Otherwise there might have to be some decorative intermixing of some other floor tiles to complete the floor.
