Well I have been moaning for a long time now that I am running out of room. Well I ran out! (which is why I have been a bit quite in the builds sections for a while).

Anyhow, I bought a pile of wood the other day, and today had the time and the weather to get on with it.

T'was my intention to try these dowel and screw connectors, you know; flat pack style. Well that didn't go as well as I had hoped: The drilling jig I have the hole is not placed in the center of the board, which requires total focus on getting all the holes to line up. It would seem that I was not paying attention as I made a cock-up in turning and flipping the shelves. So I turned back time and went for the good old one inch batten and a box of screws.

At the moment it's only the main unit the next two sections will be shorter to get the best out of the sloping ceilings.

The part that is almost done is 120cm wide and stands 236 high. Then it all goes down hill from there. 170cm high then 85cm high both 75cm wide. The shelves are all 40cm deep. So not only room for the boats, but hopefully a good few others as well.

Good luck with the DIY.

Been thinking of reorganising and decorating my modelling space too (probably in the summer now though). You seem to have everything worked out and looks like a great place to chill and build your future kits. It also has plenty of light which is invaluable!

I should point out that this is going to be a display cabinet. All the building and painting will still be going on down stairs in the work room.

Just been to buy the fibre board for the backing. I will probably spend the rest of the day fighting with that....:-/

looks good ian, just help me out with my curiosity as i work in the timber trade and sell timber for a living, are they solid pine boards 40cm wide or laminated (cannot tell from the picture) as something that wide would be very unusual in england in solid boards and what sort of price would you pay in denmark for a metre of that.

Hi Andrew. They are solid Spruce/fir wood. I cant think of the English word for them, they are made of Lenghts of wood glued together; Rettenmeier | Produkte Details

I bought mine from Bauhaus I don't know if they are in England.

I had planed to use Oak to match the floor and skirtings, but the week before I had the money to buy them, they decided to remove them from stock!!!! Bummer!

Price wise I cant tell you a meter price as they are priced per piece. It works out at about a tenner per metre. A 1m board was Kr. 109. a two metre cost me kr220. so its around there somewhere.

I will point out that wood is insanely expensive in Denmark (like most things).

Just put the back board on the high unit! Cuppa time while I man up to cut the next one. They are only 3mm fibre board and cutt much like plasticard. score a couple of times and break it over then cut though the fold.

Right then the main 'box' is done, I just banged the last nail in that holds the back boards in place.

The next bit is going to be the real fun part. Doors....:smile11:

Here I am very open to ideas/suggestions. Just as long as they keep both cats and dust out. I don't know why but we have the worlds most dusty house. Hovering everyday or once a week its the same. Dust every where!!!

Any ideas for an easy way to do sliding doors?

Shelves: The plan for those is to fit some adjustable shelving rails. Three in the wide compartment, two in the narrow ones. Then buy some glass shelves. Ikea have a good selection at OK'ish prices.

carpetting keeps dust down Ian especially woollen type,my daughter has severe allergies to dust and such like(we say shes allergic to the outside world but science says its more dangerous than that)so we need carpets to keep dust down

But the fitting of carpets will put the mokkers on the cat's daily drifting races... But its a lot easier to run the swifer over the floor than it is to get the hover out.

Great stuff - I need a new cabinet just to display the Aliens Dropship - the one major miscalculation is its too damn big to fit on any shelf I've got in the house :bangin:

Well still no doors yet. At £50 a square metre for plexiglass it might be a while as well!

Any way, I got the adjustable shelves in the wide section sorted. Chose three rails so that I could if the need arise I can arrange them staggered so a high model can stand there as well. It will also help prevent the long shelves sagging in the middle.

The narrow units with the short shelves I will be using these for the shelve supports. I see some drilling in my near future. I think it might be a good idea with some form of drilling guide. I was thinking of a length of holed strapping what builders use. Nice straight evenly spaces holes. Well that's the plan anyway.

Now about these darn doors. I am thinking of making a frame and fixing that directly to the plexiglass. Then use some form of QR screw and have them fixed in place with those. Its not as if you will be opening it every day to play with them, and the whole idea is to make it dust proof...What do you think, good idea/bad idea.

The door idea sounds good if you're happy with it being like that. Nobodys going to be opening and closing the doors anyway so nobody will notice I suppose.

£50 a sq/m!!! Jeeeesus. How much would it be for actual glass?
