Any ideas,

I have used this medium before with no problem, however a couple of days ago I gave some of my figures a final coat.

I thought it may be a problem with that particular bottle, so I opened a new one with the same result.

Very vigorously shaken, decanted and then stirred again.

This is the result, a distinct sheen!

I would of said shake it 200% but it looks like you have done that.

I can only suggest that you contact Vallejo and quote the batch number. It could be a defect batch.

I get this with Vallejo often. I now even take the top off and stir with a stick, which often makes little or no difference.

I think I will either try another make or purchase a couple of new bottles from another store!

Its not a problem I have had.

Do you use an 'agitator' in the bottle to help mix it when you shake. A small metal nut will help. Also I have used a battery operated stirrer that just fits into the top of the medium sized bottle (though not the small 17ml ones).

As I understand it, a matt or semi-matt varnish has a powder added to what is essentially gloss varnish to prevent the surface coalescing into a skin, which is what a glossy surface has to do. If the bottle is not shaken enough, some of the powder is still in the bottom of the bottle. So shake it until your arm drops off, (or better, use a nut agitator as Barry mentions).

Also, if you spray on too much, I discovered that the white powder can settle into panel lines and leave a white deposit.

If you have a problem get in touch with Vallejo. Had a Varnish which was part of a "gone wrong" batch. Told them (kindly) they sent two back with a couple of samples of other products they marketed.

Well folks, solved the mystery of the shiny matt varnish.

'USER ERROR'

As I do all my painting with the hairy stick, I am used to brushing on smooth fine coats as thin as I can, without thinning the medium I am working with.

Today I noticed that a part I had coated a little thicker than usual, (hadn't brushed out) dried perfectly Matt.

Using the same two bottles I had used before, I did a couple of tests on some spare painted bits I had laying around.

Voila, the parts with a thicker coating ( hadn't brushed out) dried matt, the parts I had levelled out (brushed out) dried with a slight sheen.

Vallejo, your honour is saved!

Moral- practice first!

That is strange Gregg. After just one coat of Matt with an airbrush the model is Matt totally.

Just wonder in brushing out thin you bring the thinners they use in the varnish to the top. As mentioned I did a test with just thinners which is the same as the paint in a puddle & the thinners dried with a slight sheen.

I don't airbrush mine when i apply it, i squeeze some into a sandwich box lid and mix it with water then brush it on with a wide flat soft brush. I can honestly say i have had no problems doing it this way.

Just airbrushed a part of a fuselage. Airfix so all Humbrol paints. Using a equivalents ended up with the Vallejo correct colour except it should be Satin finish. Added 50%/50% paint /gloss varnish all Vallego. Great satin finish achieved.
