Ok, sorry for the sort of pun. Having posted my two latest kits I thought I would bring together some photos of an ongoing, longish term project; to build many variants of the humble carrier.

the first I unfortunately do not have - accidents happen but fortunately i have some photos which were published in Military modelling many years ago, it is the Praying Mantis, the experimental weapon based on the carrier running gear, the actual vehicle is at Bovington:

This was based on the Tamiya kit with Resicast tracks.

Up next the Canadian variant mounting a 2lb gun;

Still on the mounted gun theme a British experimental version:

A quick trip 'down under' for the Australian pattern:

the last for the moment, the Rich Carrier converted into a Bren carrier:

The research for the Bren Carrier was interesting; for years there was no known surviving Bren Carrier, even Bovington didn't know of any surviving Bren Carrier. a few years ago Military Modelling mag had a feature about a show and there was a photo of a Bren Carrier, a quick email to Mil Mod and disappointment - they did not know who owned it. So off to the WWW and time on Google, an amazing bit of luck: I came across a photo of a wreck of the bren carrier on a the website of a shipping company which imported it from Australia. i emailed them and they passed on my contact details to the owner who contacted me. i explained that I was researching the vehicle for a model and he agreed to take a few photos for me. A Couple of weeks later I got an email with a link to a drop box and around 50 photos of his carrier! Very kind of him and fantastic reference.

on the bench at the moment is a standard carrier laden with the Black Dog load and a Riich mortar carrier version.

i may have been a bit over enthusiastic on the shopping front:

The plan includes:

out of the box models:

Wasp II
Wasp IIc
MG Carrier
German army version with panzerchreck
mk1 painted in caunter scheme

conversions:

Cavalry carrier
Scout carrier
Indian Army 'ambulance' version
AOP version.

as and when I finish a model, or possibly if, I will post photos.

Looks as though you have just the right number of kits there Peter......one more and you'll have enough to start your very own Group Build! ;)

Nice subject Peter and cool to build with so many variants to make. Getting a comfy daybed for this.

Cheers,
Wabble

Thanks for the encouragement.
i hope you are all very comfy - the Preying Mantis was built in 2003, the 3 2lb variants date from 2025/2026 And the Bren Carrier around 2018, at this speed - 5 every 20 years,I plan on living to over 100 to finish them!

I’m sure there must be drawings of it somewhere, and else you could always go to Bovington with a tape measure :)

I couldn't find any plans - although this was a few years ago, the best I got was some photos which were side on and front on; I knew that the wheels used were the standard carrier wheels so was able to scale measurements off the photo: take the measurements off the photo, divide them by the diameter of the wheel in the photo and multiply it, by the diameter of a wheel in 1/35 to get the 1/35th measurement. Time consuming but it worked.

Good lord.Carrier aholic Peter.Keep you busy for ages.

Y'know, with all the Universal kuts out there, you'd think someone would've done conversion sets
Meanwhile, my 28mm conversions have taken so long there are now 3D prints available
Which can also be done in 1/35th!

Resicast do a few conversions and variants - bren, scout, wasp, deep wading, all for the Tamiya kit.

https://resicast.com/eshop/en/13-vehicules-militaires?page=2

The Resicast kit corrected the horrible, out of scale Tamiya tracks with resin ones which were ok, but not that easy to get to sag. The tracks on the Preying Mantis were Resicast tracks and they look fine. The Tamiya kit is showing its age, the sides are particularly thick, so the project remained an idea until Riich released their version and the subsequent versions. Having said that, the Tamiya kit is about 1/3 of the price of the Riich so you get what you pay for.

i do have an idea which I may use a Tamiya kit for - a carrier with buoyancy aids. There are a number of photos of carriers crossing rivers using barrels etc as floatation aids, as well as photo of more formal testing. The Riich kits of the airborne carrier comes with replacement etched brass side panels so I am tempted to use the unused plastic parts to upgrade a Tamiya kit and have it depicted in water, that way the tracks will not be seen.

interesting idea about upscaling 3D prints - can you poiint me to the website? I'll have a look, but I do still enjoy cutting plastic card!

I've used pictures of Milicast in 1/72 and Resicast as reference for carriers. All the books I've got still don't show certain angles

3D Printing Valley offer a 28mm carrier in 1/32, or whatever scale you like, but being upscaled it might be a bit chunky. All depends on the mesh. I've got a Churchill AVRE bridgelayer from them (and a free 1/72 version they sent first in error) and it's a beaut. Which I MUST get around to painting!

I've also just found a listing on eBay for a 1/16 - 1/18 - 1/24 Universal kit. If they showed a parts breakdown, rather than just the CG render, I could be tempted. Depemding on the polygon count, so I understand, is what gets you the detail up- or down scaled

There was a rumour of a 1/6 Universal all metal kit, by the same guys that did a Tiger, Sherman, and I think a Stuart, a few years back. Would I have got one? I'v nowhere to put it...

BTW, thanks for dropping by my builds
Race you!

IMG_0441.jpegIMG_0442.jpegIMG_0443.jpegTakiing a bitof time off from my cavalry charge dio I have finished this WASP Carrier, a Riich kit. A nice kit which goes together nidely.

I do like the Riich Carrier kits, in some ways they are over detailed and not for a novice, but far, far better than the old Tamiya kit. One weak area I have found with the kits is the attachement for the wheels - small and it is difficult to attach the wheels so they are correctly aligned, and it is all too easy to knock one off - I know from experiance.

my solution is this simple jig consisting of a block of plywood with 2 grooves cut in it. Fortunately the blade of my electric saw is just the right width to hold a wheel.

the lengths of plastic card hold the chassis the correct height above the plywood.

The distance between the two cuts is 42mm
