I'm seeing more and more built models on eBay with the words Pro-built, I wonder what other members think about this and do you sell models with this tag line?

For my monies worth a lot of the models I see saying Pro-built do not come up the high standards I see on here, is it a case that because some one may have sold built models in the past they now consider themselves professional?

I guess I'm just interested to see what your thoughts are :)

Adrian

In my opinion, nobody is pro built unless they are Brett green or somebody like that. This is a learning experience for each model we build, and we get better each time we build one. I prefer to think we are all students learning

What defines "Pro-built"?

Someone's opinion....often of themselves :)

I very much doubt that many of the people claiming 'pro-built' models are professional model builders. We can define 'professional' in this context as someone engaged in a specified activity as one's main paid occupation rather than as an amateur.

That's not to say that I haven't seen plenty of terrific models built by people who are self professed amateurs :)

Cheers

Steve

For pro built means your contracted to build something, anyone who just builds to sell is the same as us no mater how good they are at doing it , to me their just hobbyists like rest of us

To be professional you must be in payed or contracted work in what ever field with professional training

I can class myself as a professional painter as I was trained and worked for companies and I ran my own listed company, anyone can paint and get just as good as a professional but they can't be classed in that field without the training

Yes I agree with Alan 45. Those people who built models for architects and museums, come into the professional model builders. We are just mere amateurs, well I am!

As said above. Professional normally implies some form of payment. So, sell a model to a mate for a quid Adrian, and you are a pro...............

i see those kits on ebay too.......to term them 'pro built' is laughable at times!

probuilt, in my book, means built to an order......someone asks you to build kit x for money z...a pro is someone who does that for a living

Ebay has become the bane of model makers. Too many so called 'pro-built' stuff, that isn't. When I sell mine I put I am not a pro builder and to look at the pictures to make their own minds up.

I think that is why prices for models are low, too many folk stung by so called pro-built crap so are more careful when buying.

As said, a pro-built item is something made by a professional modeller, or artist or to order from said people. Some stuff I look at and they are wanting silly money for tat.

I too see these so called pro built models offered for sale and like everyone else i dont reckon much to them. I think the problem lies with the sellers , these people probably bought the kits somewhere else and dont realise that they are just built kits , no more than that. The other possibility is that the seller built them and thinks that by calling them pro built hes going to get more for them! To me a pro builder is a rare bird indeed , there are several like phil flory ,mig jimenez etc that do it for a living as do commision builders like our very own Mike ( chameleon 2009) , these can rightly call themselves pro builders ,- me? Im just an enthusiastic amateur ,even though ive sold plenty on e bay i would never say i was a pro , tony

Its not just on ebay, I saw a stall at a model railway show selling "pro-weathered" loco's and rolling stock.....pffft! I wouldn't let it anywhere near my layout and stock. And the guy had the cheek to be asking silly money.

I had some of my stuff running on the club layout at the show and he asked who did the weathering, apparently someone had seen my stuff before his and made a negative comment about his and suggested he visit our layout to see some "proper" weathering!

Actually Bankers refer to themselves as Professional :rolleyes::mad:

A Professional is some one who provides a service for which they have trained and been approved

and meets the standard of a professional body for that discipline. Lawyers Solicitors Doctors Vets etc.

In British law they are protected disciplines in that you have to have met the standard of a professional

body before you can use any of the above descriptions.

So the loose use in general of the term Professional is to say you can trust me. So now I am back on Bankers :rolleyes::oops:

Laurie

banker

The term given to the girl you know you can get by the end of the evening. E.G. Its not a challenge, you are punching below your weight so its for sure.

You try all night to get a real nice girl, and if that fails, there is always the banker!!

"Hey Tom thats a banker over there!"

"For sure Mark, she's alright but i'm going for that real fitty"

"Oh well, if you dont get her, you can rely on the banker!!"

Definition of a Banker ????........ Or is this the definition of Sexism ???? :D

It's all advertising innit? Everything now has to be advertised as the ultimate, best, first class, gold star, A1, unbeatable quality or it don't sell.

I get a bit fed up of it to be honest as it even applies to job application forms. The company always asks for, and you have to advertise yourself as, first violinist - even if they only want someone to push wind through the trombone! Trouble with that of course is that you end up with an orchestra full of violinists and no-one able to play the trombone!

You always have to ignore the advertising hype and actually see what's on offer.

I don't care what the advert or builder says. It's a pro-build if, and only if, I think it is!
