What has Disappeared?

I don’t remember offhand which exactly, but one of the last ones, in which Harry King with his waste-processing business features as a supporting character. Goblins will also feature in the book, most likely.

It's not in 'Making Money' or 'Raising Steam' - my all-time No 1 favourite book - although both Harry and Goblins feature prominently.

Could well be in the truth, that’s got the description of Harry’s business in it, but I can’t check as I gave all my Prachetts to charity a few years ago when I needed the space. Unfortunately the Wincanton emporium didn’t reopen after covid either (it was about ten miles from me), though Wincanton was twinned with Ankh Morpork and has a treacle mine road and Peach pie street…..

From the wall of the emporium

Town sign (no longer in place as the auditors said it had to come down).

This town in New Britain, Papua New Guinea disappeared in 1994....................
rabaul 2.jpg
This the resprouting of Rabaul, after being evacuated, then destroyed by volcanic eruption. ( culprit middle distance ).
I visited Rabaul several times, late 70s early 80s, Memorable for two reasons - there was an earthquake when we were alongside - a very odd sensation afloat ( although almost a daily occurence locally! ) and the next day I broke my finger, and had to go and get an X-ray at the local clinic!
Otherwise nothing really unusual - like a lot of the islands around there, a lot of Japanese relics from WWII in the jungle - stinking hot, loads of flies, snakes & nasty tropical diseases! Not a notable place for a run ashore...............

Oily chestnut pie?
That's my tentative translation of the italian "castagnaccio", a soft pie made with chestnut flour, raisin, pine nuts and olive oil. Here's a pic, low quality but very similar to the one I used to eat at school (the pie, not the pic :rolling:) .

Sounds absolutely delicious - and you could revive it with some home baking, surely? The recipe must be out there...

It's definitely delicious and yes, the recipe is available on the net but the pie disappeared from the baker's counter many many years ago.

Well if we are on about things that have disappeared from the bakers, I’d add proper Wiltshire lardy cake. The stuff you get these days is a pale imitation. It should have layers of the toffee stuff, not just a drizzle on top.

Tastes fantastic, like a toffee bun….
