Winter is not yet here and the repairs of the summer mishaps are progressing rapidly. The wing of my Topgun Fellowship is now restored to flying order. Not quite looking "as good as new", looks ok at standoff distance. Now just needing to remount the Ivine .61 on the previously restored body and do the connecting biz. This plane came down in an uncontrollable vertical spin which I have not found a cause for. It passed through the branches of a 60/70 foot high beech tree sustaining remarkably little damage before stopping on the ground.

No flying at the weekend past tho' as the weather is a bit wild 'n wet. I saw a nice little canard light aircraft a week past Sunday, it could be the one based somewhat north of Inverness. Given that it is I have a little bit of video of it at Glenforsa some years ago. I shall have to edit some of my video tapes, digitize the results and put them on DVD. Maybe.

The subject of spins especially those that happen quickly can be a complex problem,as we know most aeroplanes will in fact spin some more than others, inherant stability is built into aircraft designs to stop them from spinning but accidents still happen,in the case with our models it does not take too much to create an inbalance that can make them unstable, for example weight build up due to repairs etc can have a severe adverse affect on stability, also the positioning of the centre of gravilty is critical, whilst most times we will get away with things at certain blanketed angles a spin will develop, this is why full sized machines in in-experienced hands can be the cause of a spin developing, enter a manouvre badly and the result can lead to a spin on attempted recovery.

The blanketing of the rudder as the airflow circulates around the rear of the fuselage can also cause spinning, this is why you see anti-spin strakes fitted to aircraft like the Chipmunk and Bulldog to counteract this effect.

There are a lot of variables that makes any aircraft enter a spin and each case needs to be looked at in its own right, warps in the structure, out of line rigging, too far aft c of g,too far forward c of g,one wing heavier than the other are all possible factors.

Some aircraft will only spin when in a certain attitude,ie the blanketing factor rears its ugly head again,it makes for a very interesting study subject.

So you will probably never really know why your model spun in that day ?

You are correct with that ? Barry

I and some very experienced fliers were surprised when it happened. The model style is of the "Pattern Aerobatic" and which normally, on centreing the control inputs, will stabilise in the direction it is pointing. It didn't.

It is sad to see so many historical planes which no longer exist. It is however very interesting to read the material you are putting out.

              Remembrance day parade.

Watched the remembrance parade on the television coming from London,my thoughts were why is it that mankind cannot stop fighting with each other ? all of the sad loss of life because nations cannot get on with one another, the sadness on the faces of the widows, the children proudly wearing their fathers medals says it all,why should there be so much suffering in this world today ?

As if we never learned our lessons from the past, and it looks as if we never will do either.

I do not think that there will ever be total world peace,it seems that wars are embedded in the nature of human beings.

                Howdy Barry,

Well, we also celebrated "Veterans day" here in the US, and thinking about all of the people who have given their lives to protect our way of life, I just wanted to say Thank you to all of our service men and women.

And I want to leave everyone with two thoughts:

"All gave some, some gave all"

                and

"War doesnt determine who is right, it determines who is "left".

Have a good day and thanks again to our service men and women,

                Greg

yup we had the new zealand airforce 737 and the eurofighter escort/ convoy pass over our home this weekend on its way to london, also took my kids down to the church where the remembrance service was taking place, the lone piper playing the last post really brings a lump to the throat.....

explained to them both the significance of what was going on......lets hope they can now remember too...... the newer and next generations must know what went on before them......

Could not agree more Guy,sad as things can be it is important to tell our children what went on,and hopefully they will appreciate the peace and freedom created for them by those who gave everything.

You see a few aircraft in your area such as these special formations.

A week of wild wintery weather. The top 650 Metres of the hills have had snow, white then patchy all week. A great deal of rain, at the "Glen" flying site Saturday past I checked the Electric fence in case the wind had blown it down. With a lot less wind I think my water planes would have left a wake down the strip. Could not find an excuse any longer not to start stripping paint. The rest of this week looks like being more of same:-(

Hello all, well a weekend of virtually no computer ! We had a visit from my mother-in-law or should I say the dragon-in-law. I'm always thankful when she departs and we get back to the nomal state of domesticity. It was my daughters' 5th birthday party on Sunday and a great time was had by all 13 kids who turned up out of the 16 invited. This turnout makes the wallet a little lighter but hey ho it is only twice a year that the kids have a birthday party each where they are free to invite whoever they want. Unfortunately this has left me with yet another weekend of no modelling, this is becoming a bad habit. I really must get some done this coming weekend as it should be a good bit of relaxation after my trade show days on Wednesday & Thursday. Now to catch up with all of the e-mails and forum postings since I was last on

                          cheers

                          Jim

I should have stayed in bed this morning !

Alarm didn't go off so we were running late. Wife eventually went for the bus and was an hour late getting there due to traffic.

New suit and rush to that customer meeting ....

Car wouldn't start so I asked a neighbour for a jump start. He suggested we turn the car around and bump start it instead (did not like to life the bonnet of his WRX). In the process I managed to slip and end up with my leg between the tyre and the tarmac.

Did not start the car or make the meeting and wrote off the new suit!

Perhaps I will not go to the dentist this afternoon .....

UPDATE - Dentist was not too bad

Every now and then we have one of those days where we wish we had stayed in bed.

On the positive side it can only go one way from there!!!
