Joe's Airfix 1/48 Spitfire Mk1

Following along. I built this one for the BoB group build last year, it's a really nice kit.

A nice choice. I'm just finishing up a Tamiya mk.I at the moment, and have one of these in the to-build pile so I can compare the two. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it.

I have removed the detail that was not needed from the lower wing. I built the interior of the lower wing up seeing as I had it out already. I found that the small landing gear hinges are very fiddly to get in place. Removed the fuselage halves from the sprue trees and cleaned them up. I painted Tamiya clear orange over the clear lens insert.

I prepped the cockpit parts, made up as many sub assemblies as I could, and everything got a dose of Mr Surfacer. I will be using the pilot to busy the cockpit up, and to disguise the seat which isn't the best shape.

I have spent most of my model life in 1/72, this 1/48 scale is great for my eyes!

Great start Joe 👍

I’ve recently switched to 1/48 from 1/72 and know exactly what you mean regarding your eyes 👀 😂

Geoff.

Yep, like you and Geoff I'm in the process of moving over to larger scales - much easier on my terrible eyesight.

You're making a great start Joe!

Yeah, I need new glasses soon...

A great start Joe. My favourite Spitfre camo' scheme.
Thanks Colin. Mine too!

A great choice Joe and coming along nicely.
Cheers Steve, hoping to meet the deadline

Cheers Portman. I only have a few 1/48 scale aeroplanes and a couple in 1/32. I love my 72nd kits, but this is certainly easier to handle... and see!

Nice work joe , cockpit looks great , pilot is nicely done too , just needs a mug of tea in his right hand though 😆

Still working on the interior. Pilot Officer Osgood Villiers Hanbury has been painted. I'm no figure painter, this is as good as it gets for me. I used Humbrol enamels, as I will for the overall scheme. After some washes and flat varnish I hope he will look okay under the canopy.

At 1/48 I would say you have done well there Joe. I am so bad at painting these guys I just leave them out now.

I think he looks great Joe.
Thanks Andy.

Me too Steve, he's only in this one because I don't have a harness to enhance the seat.

I found some information about Osgood Villiers Hanbury ("Pedro"). He destroyed 4 enemy aeroplanes during the Battle of Britain, X4382 being his usual Spitfire. Hanbury was then posted to the Middle East, where he destroyed a further 7 enemy aircraft. Hanbury was granted leave to get married in April 1943; on 3rd June 1943, the Hudson in which he was a passenger returning to North Africa, was intercepted over the Bay of Biscay by a Ju88C-6 of KG40 and shot down. He was only 26.

I might have to seek a copy of his biography
