SHARP.

I have had some success using wet and dry to re sharpen blades. Getting the angles right is crucial though
That's what I thought Si, just need someone to devise a jig that holds blades at that
exact angle.

To be absolutely honest Tony, the time taken, against the cost of new blades, is not cost effective in my opinion. In addition, you will never resharpen an old blade to as new condition unless you use an expensive bit of kit like a Tormek sharpener, and even then you might not be successful. There really are better uses of your time 😉

Thanks Tim, I guess your right but blades are so expensive and I still don't know
which ones are the best value.

I find Swann Morton scalpel blades are much sharper, and hold their edge far longer than hobby knife blades. I used to use Xacto and Swann Morton craft knives, but the switch to scalpels was a revelation in terms of sharpness and longevity. I would start with a size three handle and some some 11 or 10A blades and go from there. You can even buy disposable handle/blade combos to try, and if you don’t like them you haven’t lost much at all.

I agree with Tim. Swann Morton blades are reasonably priced, buying in bulk, very sharp and come in a variety of styles. I do have a so called hobby knife and I sharpen that but I only use it for rough work.

Funnily enough I blunted and smoothed the curved blade in my hobby knife and now use it to apply filler.
I did exactly the same Tim ! Have to agree with you on the blades too . The swann morton blades are cheap enough ( John sells them in the shop £2.49 for a 5 pack or about £17 for 100) and as you say , you could never sharpen a blade as well as they come from the factory ( unless youve made your own laser sharpening machine )

New blades aren't too expensive, especially if you buy lots in one go, also, buy the least expensive, they lose their edge just the same as the more premium ones.

Miko (once tried to sharpen an xacto blade with a razor strop, didn't work!)

I generally use Swann Morton scalpel blades as I agree they are the best.I normally add a couple of packs when I make up an order from the shop. I did get some knock offs ones from another supplier but they are poor by comparison.

As an aside as a lad I seem to remember seeing adverts in newspapers for pyramid shaped containers to keep razor blades in with the promise that they would stay sharp longer…. Do you think they worked 🤔😅

Geoff.

I remember in junior school our teacher had us experiment with cardboard pyramids!

No, they didn't work, obviously!

Miko (sceptic)

I remember that vaguely as well. Folded dollar bills wasn’t it?
