Hi,
I’ve just registered for the forum. This is the first forum I have ever joined, so apologies if I don’t follow ‘protocol.’!

I have purchased a scale 1/32 De Havilland FB Mark VII model. I was surprised to find that cements and paints were not included; which is not how I remembered Airfix models (admittedly 60 years ago!).

There is a long list of paints (36): do I need them all to complete the model?

Presumably, brushes will als need to be purchased separately - any recommendations for make/brush type and sizes?

Likewise, would recommend obtaining all listed tools and cements?

Welcome to the forum Anthony. We are a friendly bunch and skill range from beginner to award winning.
Things have definitely changed although there are beginner kits still available which include paints etc.
I doubt you will need all the paints unless you're going for 100% accuracy. There's probably a choice of aircraft you can build. Decide on which one you want to build and then carefully go through the instructions and see which colours you need.
As for other things you'll need. Probably not too many but some are essential.
Liquid styrene cement and an old fairly fine brush to apply it. Loads of choice. You'll need side cutters/clippers to cut parts from the sprue. A decent scalpel or hobby knife and some sanding sticks. Paint brushes - fairly wide flat brush for the large areas (1/32 scale is pretty big) and some finer pointed brushes for detail painting. No need to spend a fortune but get something reasonable. Paints - aerosol primer and water based acrylics for top coats.
Create a build thread on this forum. You will get positive support. It's a great way to ask questions and I guarantee you will only get polite, helpful comments.
I'm sure others will come in with further ideas but the main thing is have fun and enjoy a great hobby.

Hi and welcome mate, similar story to most on here, eg: used to make models as a kid, life gets in the way, then later in life we come back to it, Lol.
Some airfix kits do still come with paints, cement and a brush, but they (paints and cement) are pretty dire TBH.
All you really need is a set of sharp nippers, maybe a sanding stick or two, some decent modern cement, eg: Tamiya Extra Thin, maybe some tweezers, a nice sharp knife/scalpel type blade.
As for paints if you want to follow the kit, then yes you can buy all the paints, or just paint it how you like, many go "off script" and do their own thing when it comes to painting.
Technology has moved on so modern paints, adhesives, primers, brushes, etc are all way better than when we were kids.
Modern cement in particular is so much better than old gloopy tubes, as above Tamiya Extra thin or Revell cement (the blue ones) are all pretty good.

HI SIR i also build 1/32 scale aircraft as i am at the moment building a big 1/32 F16 AIRCRAFT an i fit lights in my models with 2 mm leds working from 12v as i think the lights bring the model to life an no you dont need all them paints just the main ones thats all i use an i use rattle can paints on my models if you want to know more please ask away an yes WELCOME to this great forum AN WHAT PLANE ARE YOU BUILDING SIR ? AS i dont know what a

Coincidence with your name as I’m attempting this - much bigger and more detailed - model in memory of my father, Jim, who was a Nightfighter pilot with a Pathfinder squadron during WWII.

Welcome to the forum. You'll probably find you have a few different colour schemes, which would account for all the paints, although with 1/32 there are probably lots of little parts that are just a dab of paint here and there. Whether you really need all 36 of them for this model is doubtful, but if you get the bug again, they'll all end up being used somewhere.

Best advice, though, is not to go crazy buying all the tools and bits - I am pretty sure I've got some I've maybe used once or twice in years! The list Peter gave is going to stand you in good stead. Stay long enough, and you'll have stacks of tools, paints and everything else anyway.
