So, aside from my other rambling posts about stuff I am attempting to build with questionable levels of success I stumbled across this on eBay and could not resist buying it as it's something I have had a long standing obsession with (the real thing ideally, though I lack the funds for purchase, recommissioning, training to drive it and a few thousand acres to open cast mine).

Anyway, should be something different to build aside from the lanc' which is on pause till PE parts arrive.

Has anyone built this before and got any pics?

James

I hope Dave (Gern) doesn't see this.
It's on his list of 'Wish I'd never bought it.' He certainly never will start it!

Too late Ron! I see'd it!

I've seen a couple of pics of it made up James, and I think there's a build review floating around - or at least there was a few years ago.

The issue I have is the railings. There's LOTS of flash on all of them which has to be cleaned up. I think I counted about 8000 tiny holes about 3mmx2mm which each have four individual sides to clean. Alternatively, you can get hold of PE railing in 1/200 scale which would work - if you got the £200 -£300 needed to buy enough. Did I say there's a LOT of railings?

Wow Gern........I might go for a refund instead if that's the case

I didn't actually realise how big it is. Wondering where it's going to go if I ever manage to build it after cleaning up 8000 railing holes best get my files and knives ready.

I shall start a build thread when it arrives but have a feeling it's going to be a long build!!!

:tears-of-joy: :tears-of-joy: James, set the alarm clocks in monthly intervals to wake the audience in the back row or find a way to liven up the cleaning process. If you're patient, it'll get done and will look impressive.

Cheers,
Richard

James .
Well we have plenty of time at the moment, so something to enjoy , esp the sanding of those 8000 individual holes for the railings :upside:.

Don’t use power tools on plastic unless you can really turn down the speed....you will end up with plastic candy floss....best thing for cleaning holes is a fine tapered broach hand held.....

The only Dremel type tool I've ever found that will run slowly enough to use on plastic is a rechargeable one from Lidl. The proper Dremel ones won't go anywhere near slow enough.

I know you'll be looking in horror when you finally open the box James, but I thought I'd let everyone else in on the number of railings you got to clean up. I also forgot to mention all the rigging ....

There are four of these sprues

Mustn't forget the rigging

Anyway. That's why mine ain't gonna get builded!!

Rigging I can cope with........that's a lot of railings though
Got me scalpel ready. I'm more bothered by what I'm going to do with it once it's built..........any suggestions?

Actually how big is it going to be whan finished. Would you have dimensions for us. I think a center round table would be a nice place to put it. It has to be in a glass case.

Cheers,
Richard

Hi Richard,

Dimensions below......

I'm not sure my house is big enough to have it as a table centre piece and not sure how that would be received as a nice an idea as I personally think it is

Gern,

This is what I'd planned to use for rigging (see photo), should look a bit more like scaled down wire ropes.....
