Well here we are , part 5 , the f-105 Thunderchief . Ive been dying to get to this one as its a proper beast of an aircraft . It was a huge machine , when it entered service it was the biggest , heaviest single seat single engined aircraft ever . It could carry a bomb load bigger than a b24 liberator and was supersonic at low altitude and mach 2 capable at height. Originally designed as a tactical nuclear strike aircraft it gained most notoriety as a bomb truck in vietnam . The kit is classic Monogram at its finest and dates from 1985 . Its beautifully detailed but with not a huge parts count , right up my street ! I intend doing it as an early model in natural metal as i feel it fits better with the century series era .

You may recall I built a Monogram Bf 110 of 1968 vintage a while ago and was surprised at the quality of it for such an old kit - proof that not all old kits are donkeys. A quick gander at the above sprue shots bodes well for you.

Cheers andrew , all the kits ive got for this series build are Monogram ( or revell reboxes of monogram ) . I love them , for their time they were streets ahead of comparable makers . Dont get me wrong they had a few dodgy kits too , with the sixties fad for working parts but mid seventies on they were pretty much all good .

Quite a brute of an aircraft. The kit does look very nice even if it is a bit long in the tooth. I like the "molded in olive drab" on the box :smiling2:

If you intend bare metal why not foil wrap it the technique such as it is easy to do and it would definitely bring out all the nice detail in the kit plus your actually using metal to cover the plastic
All you need is patience as you have to cut out the individual panels and using foil adhesive stick them down and then buff them to bring out the surface detail underneath the foil
I did a F1 English Electric Lightning several years ago as a group build using foil and I have to say I will never use paint to represent bare metal again that was one my best models I have built and still looks metallic and the foil has taken on a pertina where various areas are oxidising all at different rates given the subtle shade variation over the whole model

Here’s some pictures I’ve just took of it about 2 min ago like I said the only paint is the red and the missiles and few bits of the engine exhaust and radome all metallic has been done using foil wrapping

Decals came this morning. I got aftermarket as the kit only supplies one option for a camo machine and i wanted to do a nat metal one , plus the old monogram decals would probably have given me grief anyway ! The great thing about the a/m decals too is that the 3 options are all aircraft that served in Vietnam so i can also have it in typical ‘thud’ appearance -fully bombed up !

Started yesterday on this , unsurprisingly with the cockpit ! This is my kind of cockpit - very nicely detailed but only four parts ! It should come up nicely with some careful painting and no doubt there will be a few little add ons ( perhaps some buckles on the seat and a couple of guitar string oxygen hoses ) After doing a bit of research , the early D model Im doing needs some parts of the kit correcting . The problems arise from the fact the kit , supposed to be a D , is a retool of the earlier released G model , but quite a few features of the G werent on the early Ds. It mainly means removing various antennae bumps and lumps . One other thing that needs addressing is the wing anhedral is too pronounced , but with a bit of minor surgery it should be easily corrected.
