Reminds me of the 'cotton-reel tanks' that we made as kids, with a matchstick, cotton reel and elastic band

Been a LONG, LONG time since I've heard of them Gerry. I suspect modern kids won't be as impressed with them as we were 'cos there's nowhere to put the batteries!

They’ll find it pretty difficult to find a cotton reel as well Dave.....

Oh yes! - my father used to make us a supertank! Panel pins hammered in around the rims, and a candle to lubricate the driving arms - when did wooden cotton reels vanish?

left hand one looks quite similar....

Apparently the guy on the left is wearing the “new” 1980 uniform....hardly Daguerreotype, perhaps Ambrotype? I wonder what idiot thought ties were a good idea for front line officers though.....

Bet they formed a committee for that.
Those ties were clip on's, made them look smart and tidy yet safe from being grabbed.

Probably the same idiot who thought ties were appropriate with combat suits in the 60's and 70's - four layers of material for nuclear flash protection; shirt, hairy, KF, ridiculous , - and a brown knitted 'Slim Jim' tie. By 'eck we looked sexy! Thank Heavens for Denison Smocks!
