This thread has prompted me to go into the loft on a search into the remnants of the teenage stash that has followed me for the past forty years...













There are a few others plus some other makes and non-1/72 Airfix if you guys want to see them and Lee is happy for me to add them to his thread.

One of my favourites was the TSR2 and the limited edition print painted by Dave Jones:

He also did the Nimrod, Challenger, RNLI Lifeboat and the 1/400 scale ships amongst others:


Talking of Dave Jones, I met him for the first time at Telford in 2007 and he wanted to donate a prize to the ATF's Charity raffle being held at the time. The winner got to choose the subject and then Dave painted it. I didn't take part in the raffle just in case I won! However, Dave said that seeing as I would be missing out, he would paint a picture of my choice for me anyway. I chose HMS Antrim sailing up the Elbe in September 1979 when I was serving on her. He did the painting, framed it and sent it to me:

I am still overwhelmed by his gesture and we remain in touch still, even though he no longer paints for Airfix.

So true Mick, saturday morning in local toy shop or birthdays/xmas in the excellent Bud Morgans shop in Cardiff city centre!

Can clearly remember about 1972 ( only 5 at the time ) my wonderful dad taking me to Bud Morgans, bought me a Airfix superfortress, paint and glue followed by a slap up dinner in a Woolworth cafe:thumb2::thumb2:Home and before you know it built and bombing the c**p out of someone, lovely, lovely day!!

Well done Bob! I think I was eight years old at least before I first managed to complete a bagged series 1 Airfix - 2 shillings and 11 pence.

As to the Superfortress. I believe that was a present in my teens. Still haven't built it....... :rolling:

I too have been enjoying this thread and have been searching for my old catalogues which were in a 'safe place'. I finally found them last night!
I have so many happy memories looking through my catalogues dreaming of all the kits I'd love. I still have them,
It's so hard to chose one piece of artwork.

My journey into Airfix started with their 1:72 figures and I believe that my first batch were their Native Americans then known as Red Indians!


This is my oldest catalogue from 1968


I have a few from the 1970's too.


II used to love their Dogfight Doubles.


Their Collector's Series had a huge influence into what I model now.

One Airfix box-art had quite an effect on me in the early Seventies:

I was so excited by it that I joined the Sea Cadets and in 1976 I joined the Royal Navy. I achieved my ambition of serving on one of the County Class Destroyers when I was drafted to HMS Antrim in 1978.

These pictures are so evocative. Every time I look I think, “missed that one…..
Love the Indians, by the way, another great image. It seems that Airfix moulded it’s soldiers in different colours….my Indians were a reddish brown…..as were the waggon train and the High Chapparell, but my cowboy set were moulded in cream…US cavalry were in Blue though!

My first soldiers were these….


Got a lot to answer for they have……
