Calvados is the elixir of life!

Calvados is just Cider with the water removed...Old trick was to make Cider AKA scrumpy, put it in a barrel outside in the winter. The water would freeze and the much stronger booze could be found un-frozen in the center.... And yes it works. Maybe not as good as the expensive stuff but if you have a ton of apples in the garden...

Not quite Ian……freezing out the water doesn’t remove the lighter volatiles or generate the new aromatics that are produced during distillation. It does strengthen the alcohol content, yes, but it isn’t the same process. If it was you could produce brandy by freezing wine…….
Waitrose sell it, by the way….damn fine spirit.

I dont think they made it because they where connaisseurs, I think they (farmers and the like) just made it to get totally sh......... mashed.
besides that its not that hard to make a redneck still. Beer through a distillery was how some gut many many years ago made Whiskey. "I wonder what would happen if I put this really shite ale though the old water heater" (to be read with a Billy Connoly accent and large pinch of salt.)

Didn’t say that it was hard to make a still, just that freezing out the water, and distilling the liquor are two totally different processes with totally different results Ian.
A home made still is almost certainly how this stuff was made in the pre industrial age. Apart from anything else, freezing the water out of anything was pretty difficult before electricity and refrigeration systems were commonplace. In the rural areas of the calvados region I would suspect that was around the 1950s…..possible even later. Even in January and February the outside temperature isn’t routinely below freezing, especially as taking water out of an alcohol mix like that would need temperatures of around -10 or lower. Distilling is far easier to control and available when required…..

Now they look interesting. Far more so than the endlessly regurgitated Star Wars stuff. It’s from a much more rounded background universe as well.

I enjoyed the books in my early twenties, Dave , but I know what you mean. I REALLY enjoyed the latest film, that these are based on- I think they pitched it just right (don't bother with the David Lynch one)

Well duh. I was down w/flu back in the 60s & my wife new I liked Asimov's work & brought back the first book of his she saw from the library (it was on the return cart). It was a textbook on blood chemistry. It was fascinating, he could really write.
