1/72 HMS Iron Duke - Type 23 Frigate

Very appropriately, today is ANZAC Day. With beautiful weather, and a helping hand from SWMBO, sea trails went ahead for HMS Iron Duke. I am very pleased with the results, no leaks, stable, a good dash of speed and handles well.

Hi Chris, nothing too exciting, I've just been busy assembling the Lynx.

1/72 HMS Iron Duke - Type 23 Frigate

Well after a short holiday I'm back. To make you all jealous........ having fish and chips at the harbour in Nelson as the sun goes down, with my better half Sharon. So now a little building progress, I have managed to get the decals on, the cranes made, the RIB's painted and loaded, and a...

Those of you with dual workspaces (build inside, spray elsewhere)

This is my airbrushing setup (very hi-tech), an old cardboard box with an old bathroom extract fan attached to a length of 5" corrugated air vent hose, stuck through the window. While very rudimentary, it works.

1/72 HMS Iron Duke - Type 23 Frigate

Well the tank test was a success, after about and hour in the water, and having run the motors and operated the rudders and stabilisers, I am pleased to say that there was no water ingress. Happy days.

1/72 HMS Iron Duke - Type 23 Frigate

I got stuck in with the hairy stick and painted the white heli deck lines and the yellow and black warning markings on the foredeck, and now she is starting to liven up a bit. I'm waiting for the transfers for the depth markings and the various stickers that I think I will need from Fox...

1/72 HMS Iron Duke - Type 23 Frigate

Hi Chris, unfortunately no bits have come yet, however there has been an update on tracking, that the parcel actually left the UK on 16th February. Now that is after it was posted on 16th December, and remember it was ordered in October!!!! Royal Mail strikes and cyber attacks certainly played...

A little more paint done, and thought I'd pop on a pic of my current state of progress .

1/72 HMS Iron Duke - Type 23 Frigate

Well the breakwater and the seawolf missile silo covers are done, and I sprayed the deck in Vallejo Dark Sea Grey, which creates nice contrast, in time I want to weather everything for a more realistic look. Now I'm looking at the cranes for the RIB's, and they look to be quite intricate, so...

1/72 HMS Iron Duke - Type 23 Frigate

STILL waiting for deliveries, man this is doing my head in. I have managed to do a couple of small things in the interim just to keep the mojo going, which is becoming harder by the day. I cut out some legs for the life raft containers, attached them and painted, as well as a start on the...

1/72 HMS Iron Duke - Type 23 Frigate

I've spent some time working on the Harpoon launcher system, which being scratch built are not exact replicas of the real thing, however they are as close as I could reasonably get them. :smiling:

1/72 HMS Iron Duke - Type 23 Frigate

I took advantage of a glorious summers day, and gave HMS Iron Duke her first wet bottom. Fortunately no leaks, just a minor drop from the port prop shaft, so will need to re-grease that. I will need to add some ballast fore, and she has a slight list to starboard as well, that I will need to...

1/72 HMS Iron Duke - Type 23 Frigate

I have dry assembled everything done so far, and it looks like we are getting there. :smiling:

1/72 HMS Iron Duke - Type 23 Frigate

Further progress, the black stripe at the waterline has been painted, and I'm pretty happy with the result. That was a lot of masking and re-masking, I'm glad it's done :smiling: ;) All in, about 6 coats of each colour has been sprayed on. All that really needs doing is the clear-coat, but...

1/72 HMS Iron Duke - Type 23 Frigate

I took the paint on the hull back to light grey, then applied a rattle can primer, sort of a red oxide, which is the colour I was looking for. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions and advice.

1/72 HMS Iron Duke - Type 23 Frigate

I decided to spray the underside of the hull, and am pretty disappointed, I used Vallejo Air Hull Red, and to my eyes it looks brown, after two light coats. I'll have to look for an alternative, any suggestions?
