Well, Christmas over and back to the workshop.

Started to make progress on the upper wing mid section. This section also has a tank built into it so i set to the litho plate and this time embossed the rivits.

This tank section is held in place with metal straps. Litho plate was too thin for this so i cut up a pea tin left over from the Christmas Dinner, Luckily the mrs washes everything before she puts it in the recycle bin, hehe.

I cut three strips and made the straps.

After covering the section with Solatex i fitted the straps in place.

Superb bit of building andy, i just love the whole thread, the amount of work and thought thats gone into this is amazing, its a master class in using all manner of materials in unusual ways to get the desired result, Fantastic!! cheers tony

Thanks Tony. I have to confess that though some of the ideas i have here are great... not all credit goes to me. As i indicated earlier in this thread, i have take guidance from Grahame (Greyhead) and his build of the smaller version. He did such a fantastic job it inspired me to pick this model for my tribute build. I hope i can turn out somewhere near the same result as he did. Thanks Grahame for providing me with the insparation and fine detailed thread to follow for reference.

Progressing with this section of the upper wing... its time to make the 2 Oil Sumps that are located on the under side. Simply made from Balsa that has been cut and shaped, covered with fine cloth to stop any splitting with age and then glued to the flange plates.

Simulated stiches have been created from using fine Styrene half round section cut into short peices and glues with Canopy glue.

Now a nice little trick. Making rib tapes that look good enough. A straight cut edge would look awful so here is a little trick. Take a Hacksaw Blade and lay it on the solartex and pulling up and across the blade tear a nice serated edge, find your desired width and do the same again. Instant rib tapes.

View attachment 37822View attachment 37823

Now to fix the tapes with the iron.

I think that it hasnt turned out too bad, a lick of paint and some weathering will set it all off lovely im sure.

Cheers

Hi Andy! Fabulous work, the more you put into it more nervous I grow, of it's upcoming maiden-flight.

I've quick question for you; Have you, in your research, found any evidence that paint-chipping was common on these steam-condensers? If so how did it look?

/Daniel

Thanks Trey, as it happens i am a plumber to, i am what they call multi skilled in the trade, being qualified in every trade :) , Guess thats why my ability to create flows freely. Thanks Daniel. I haven't seen anything as yet that looks chipped. Be sure to stay tuned and all will be revealed at the weathering stage. I tend only to do my home work on the parts that i want to build at the time. If there is evidence of chipping you will see it in this thread.

Happy New Year Everyone and thanks for following.

Back again for another installment.

We are now moving onto an exciting little project within itself. The making and mounting of the Lewis Gun and running rails/gear.

First of all a look at what it should look like on a layout drawing.

View attachment 38443

I started with the top wing mounts by shaping some square balsa stock and then adding a hard wood top for screwing into and lining with litho plate and adding a few rivets to finish them off.

View attachment 38444View attachment 38445View attachment 38446

The next part was to construct the main running rail that fits to these mounts. Using several thickness of balsa stock i came up with the exact width i wanted by laminating them together. Then i added a hard wood ply skin for strength and a styrene strip along the top so that i could get a good flat surface with a rounded edge.

Then i cut some brass strip and made the brackets that hold the cable pulley. I still have to make the wheel as yet. Rivets added along the bottom add the realism.

View attachment 38447View attachment 38448View attachment 38449View attachment 38450View attachment 38451View attachment 38452View attachment 38453View attachment 38454

with this part almost complete i decided to move onto making the Lewis Gun so that i can find the exact location for the forward mounting brackets needed to secure the front of the gun to the rail.

View attachment 38455

You will see from this picture that though it is a 1/4 scale Lewis gun it doesn't look exactly like the one that is mounted on the plane. The Guns on the SE5a had some sort of shroud that enclosed both the barrel and the air chamber of the gun. This need to be duplicated for the correct effect and for the mounting mechanism required to fit it to the aft part of the running rail. This is a modification that i will make from some sort of material and add it to the gun.

For now you will see the construction of this gun but both the barrel nor the air chamber will be glued into place, this is so that i can slide them into the tube and then glue them on place.

This is the process of Assembly for the gun and will conclude shortly.

The picture shown on the box doesn't look anything like real/scale and is not the effect i will be looking for... i intend to make quite a paint job on this one, more so than the Vickers Gun as this will be in prime view when the project is finished. Lets hope i can do it justice.

Cheers

Andy
