discussion 1/48 Hawker Hurricane Mkiic PZ 865 Kings Cup Air Race

This is my latest achievement to the modelling world. I have been very busy with work of late and very little time to myself to get on the bench.


This particular aircraft caught my attention while doing some research for something else. So I thought what do I have to try and build this that I already have. PZ865 is the last ever Hawker Hurricane built. Instead of being sent to work/war the Hawker company purchased the Aircraft. After the war PZ865 was de-armed and painted Royal Blue with Civil A/C codes in gold G-AMAU. The Spinner was also sprayed Gold.The cockpit according to ref was left in interior  cockpit green and the U/C kept in original aluminium.


In 1949 Group Captain Peter Townsend CVO,DSO, DFC with bar, flew this Aircraft firstly in the Kemsley Air Trophy Race as  No 41


In 1950 he flew it again after  it was entered by HRH Princess Margeret and acheived 2nd place. PZ865 has had a lot of costumes/ painted in differant guises over the years and was even in the film "Battle of Britain"


The aircraft is still in service with Battle of Britain Memorial flight, but with codes EG*S


The model is Airfix kit A04102 MK 1 Hurricane. ( Not strictly a IIC ) but I thought I could sand away original Mk1 gun bays on wings and rescribe panels. The armament was compleatly removed on the Air racer aircraft.


Kit went together well and no major hiccups and just added pe seat belts and pe control panel. Paints used were Tamiya, Vallejo, Model Air and the decals came from Lifelike decals ( just to add they came from Australia!!! ) there I was wanting a cheap build!

Took me a little while to get the exhausts / and all pe parts and I had to wait for the decals to arrive from down under. Once the general build complete I spayed first with XF21 for a primer then sprayed gloss black. Then I gave 3 coats of light spray of  X3 Royal Blue. This gave a good clean gloss finish. After a couple of coats of Klear I then applied the decals and these were not the easiest, not through manafacture as they went down well but with the gold lines having to match up even and level was. It's not perfect but I'm pretty pleased with the result and it only took 2 months!

I really like that Robert, the Hurri really suits a racing scheme (I built a 1/72 Hurricane in those markings a few years ago, although I went for a somewhat lighter blue).

Thanks guys for all the positive remarks. I enjoyed this build and I have more differant WW2 looking Aircraft in the pipeline with vibrant colour schemes.

That looks very much the part.


Air Races not long after the war must have been a feast for the ear as well as the eye. All those Merlin's and Packard's and big star motors...Hmm

It's always unusual seeing a warbird in 'fancy dress'. But still, a really nice model.
