Hi chaps.

So the cockpit is done, along with some dry fit pics below.

Since I took these the fuselage has been joined and the wings attached. Pics to follow in due course. Just a shame that you won't see much of the detail once it's buttoned up!

Oh and that finger in one of the shots is my little finger.....

Lovely paint job on the office Andy. In 1/72 its not an easy job to get a good result but that is really nice.

OK chaps, so latest update....
  • Pre-main coat mottling done. Chose a darker colour than usual as I was going for a less worn effect. Forgot to take a picture though DOH!
  • Main coat on next....this was a mistake as it turns out though.

    Normally I do the wheels first and then 'mask' them by filling them with AK's plastic masking putty and then do the main colour.
  • Masked for the wheels wells but Corsairs have vey complex shapes compared to most Brit planes and despite my best efforts had a quite a bit of seepage

    ......which is why I normally do the wheels wells first. DOH x2!!!
  • Repaired the seepage but lost a lot of mottling in the process, as I needed to ensure an even coat all over....so this will have to a newer look than I had intended....

  • Pre decal gloss coat has been applied but after the below shot was taken.
As for the colours....what a palaver. The destructions call for Glossy Sea Blue as per real life but AK (I have their US Navy and MC set) don't call it that. They seemingly call it Deep Sea Blue...at least according to the picture on the back of the box....but looking at the bottle I was not convinced. But having no choice I gave it a shot and having sprayed it a test piece, I think it looks ok....at least to my very untrained eye.

According to Dana Bell, wheel wells and the cowl flaps could be light grey, albeit it was not apparently the norm on the wheel wells. I've gone with that to bring a bit of variety, although in hindsight the blue is showing through a bit in places.

Pics below...but note that the blue has turned out much lighter in the pic than in real life.

Nice work andrew , Ive been using the AK 3rd gen paints recently on luftwaffe stuff and found them to be excellent , cheers tony

Tony - this is only the 2nd time I've only used them to any great extent and whilst it took a while to get used to them compared to Vallejo, I too have been impressed with them.

Joe - the yellow nose is a nice contrast, just a shame the plane shouldn't have it....see the next update.....

Ok chaps.

And so the decals are on. Fortunately this doesn't have lots of little stencils, like the usual Airfix kits, whether that's Tamiya's choice or a reflection of the Corsair I don't know but it's a nice change from the dozens I have had to add with the last two Airfix kits.

The decals by Tamiya's standards are actually very good and I might be wrong but they seem thinner than the usual Tamiya offering I have experienced. They have certainly gone down much better than usual for Tamiya, with minimal discernible lip/edge unlike the 'ramp' you often get with them...but they're still not up to the Cartograph standard.

Oh and when I was putting them on, I suddenly realised the plane I am doing didn't have a yellow nose band......oops. But at least it add a bit more interest and only a true rivet counter will notice.

OK chaps. So nearly there. All painting done - had to finish off painting the rockets this week, all decals on and pre-weathering clear coat on.

FYI, in case you do this kit, Tamiya appear to have you put the stretched oval prop stencils on the wrong way. They would have you do it across the width of the blade but every single online image of a real plane has them along the blade, so I have gone with that.

Next up will be the usual Flory washes on the fuselage and my home brew off-black pin wash elsewhere.

Ok chaps.

So this has crossed the finish line without any major dramas:
  • Basic weathering but kept it minimal as going for relatively new look - Flory wash, pin wash and exhaust stains (after the final gloss coat was applied) done using black Vallejo Model Air combined with light grey and brown Vallejo Game Washes
  • Everything stuck on, including the easy knock off antenna and the like
  • Final gloss coat - the pre-decal full gloss coat looked a bit too glossy at this scale, at at least to my highly untrained eye, and so I decided to do a 50/50 gloss/satin coat but in hindsight it's still a bit too matt looking but never mind.
Have to say fit has been very good and no major complaints.

The only final niggle was with what is apparently the VHF antenna behind the cockpit. The destructions, clearly shows a hole to put it in but no such hole exists and there's nothing in the destructions showing such a hole, or telling me to cut one out out, so I simply cut off the little 'nib' of plastic that was meant for the hole and glued it in what looks like the right place.

My only real complaint is that the nice, dark, monotone blue shows up dust like you would not believe.....but such is life!!
