If you do pin the yards (which I think is a good idea) watch out for where you place the pins. The temptation is to space the top sail yard and the topgallant yard at roughly equal spacing up the masts however when the sails were not bent to the yards the top sail yard and the top gallant yard tended to be lowered toward the maintop and the cross trees respectively so that the sails could be bent on without the crew having to climb too far up the ratlines. When the sails were in pace the yards could then be hauled up by the lifts to their correct places.
