I tried that Pete maybe its me but I kept getting ridges and it just felt wrong. Can't you just fit finer abrasives to it?
John I would need to buy a new drill as my current drill chuck only takes up to 10mm dia and the dowel is 13mm. I think I have solved the issue I returned the sander and bought another lathe which takes up to 400mm point to point.Brian
When I made masts and spars I just chucked the dowel into an electric drill and held the end with sandpaper as it spun. This takes a little while but it is very effective. You need to wear some gloves to hold the sandpaper as it tends to get a bit warm.
