Brian's Caldercraft 1/72 HMS Victory

Hi Brian

I would finish off the deadeyes. It will stop the foremast shrouds flopping about while you attack the main mast. It would also allow you to finish the FUTTOCK shrouds, below the foretop.

Question for you guys been told by another forum that the lashings should be black although I found this.

For a model of HMS Victory, the shroud lashings (the ropes passing through the deadeyes to tighten the shrouds) are historically represented as natural tan, hemp, or light brown. They are distinct from the dark brown or black tarred shrouds themselves. While some modellers use black for all rigging, natural or tan is considered more accurate.

  • Shrouds: Usually painted or treated as dark brown/black due to Stockholm tar.
  • Lashings/Lanyards: Natural hemp color or tan.
  • Alternative: Some modelers opt for tan to represent un-tarred rope that was regularly adjusted.

These lashings, also known as lanyards, connect the deadeyes and are typically left untarred to prevent them from seizing up

Looking very good indeed mate; the rigging on the Sovereign will give you a 'stand still in shock' moment I think, especially with euphroes and the like!

Thanks Steve the Sovereign is a way off yet, The rigging on the Victory is no walk in the park :)

More great stuff Brian. I have always kept the lanyards as natural rope colour, they would certainly not be tarred since they were frequently redone and tarring would make them hard to work with.

Worth every spasm Brian 😁. Seriously, hope it improves soon. Could be caused by tension as you tie off all those cords…..

Years ago I was subject to them so I adjusted my chair & work so I was looking up or at least across so spine was straight relieving my back strain.
