Hello, everyone.
I need some advice. As the Poilus vignette nears completion (photos to follow in due course), I'm planning the next subject which is probably going to be a captain in the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders at Tel-el Kebir (think I've spelt that correctly). Can anyone enlighten me as to how rank was denoted on infantry then? I have a Victoria's Heroes fig, which comes without info.
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks
DS

Hi Dave. Tel-el-Kebir was fought in 1882, just after the Cardwell reforms but just before officers ranks were changed to their modern format. Rank insignia was worn on the shoulder but only field officers (major and above) wore crowns and stars. Having said that, during the Egypt campaign officers of the Camerons appear to have worn a plain scarlet jacket without any insignia at all!

Thanks, Windy. Well, if nothing else, that makes life easier!
So, no pips or cuff embroidery?

That's great. Thanks.
It looks like the same figure - painted really well.
Now I'm worrying...

...and here is a contemporary picture by James Wilson from 1883 that is in the Highlander’s museum...
