discussion CDW's Soviet BA-1 "Izhorskiy"

well i was going to do a Soviet armoured car in use by Korean forces but i came across this in a LMS and it just screamed out .... "build me ... i'm unusual"

Made by Eastern Express it's a Soviet BA-1 "Izhorskiy" armoured car 1932-1934 ... in use in WW2 although it was obsolete at the time.

Box and sprue shots (it has rubberised tyres), the plans (just two sheets of A4), limited detail but good enough to do something with ... theres minimum flash that'll just need a quick scrape.

Another interesting model Colin!

Looks fun!! I was thinking, your model and Papa's one are ideal for "heavy" weathering or "chipping"!

I'd never heard of it either which is why it had the appeal.

I think i'll have it looking like it's seen a bit of action but cant go too crazy because it's not got masses of detail ... possibly set in a little simple diorama with a couple of figures to enhance it (if that follows the build guidelines??)

well an hour tonight produced this ....

When i said it looks fairly flash free ... well ... i couldn't be more wrong ... i thought the sides were solid untill i looked inside the body and then double checked the destructions ... every opening was a solid bit of flash about a third the thickness of the main plastic.

There are also no handles in the kit for the hatches etc, easy enough to remedy with a bit of wire, some of the other parts will need reshaping or scratching up.

Thanks for the comments ... and Ian, it looks like we both have our work cut out for us eh?

After having a browse online and looking through some old WW2 encyclopedia i found a few bits of info that i'm going to add to this model, the Mark 1 was made very basic and things like external door handles were left off.

According to some info i found (even though they were almost obselete) they were updated during the first few months of WW2 to be approximate to the mark 3/4 and things like door handles, braces, hooks etc were welded on.

This is todays progress, pretty happy with how it's going

David it was just sitting in a corner of a shelf of a local model shop, they had two, dont think the owner knew how long they had been there to be honest ... he even made a comment like "thats a weird one eh?" when i took it to the till

Cost £13 which isn't that bad even with the kit being so basic and flashy.

Got the chassis and engine painted up and weathered. Not too bad detail on the engine to be honest but it's a shame as it will be hidden under the body in the dio.

They did sometimes have the front two doors open when trundling around apparently to help cool the engine, but even having these cut out and opened a little would only show the radiator so i'll just have to know it's under there unfortunately.
