Hi All

As with so many others (I've been reading the introductions :smiling4: ) I have decided to have another go at modelling, must be at least 50 years since I last ruined some plastic kit or other. I'm now nearly 66 and have started to free up time in order to allow me to do new things and to repeat past mistakes :disappointed:.

I have a particular project in mind (probably more than one) based on my Father's time spent in Russia. My father graduated in 1941 as a Leutnant from his Panzer training school and was posted to Russia as part of operation Barbarossa. Sufficient to say he survived the war and ended up as a POW in a camp at Friday Bridge in Cambridgeshire just outside Wisbech.

He fought in and with many armoured vehicles, Panzer 11, 111 and 1v, Tigers and the later Panthers but his favourite/preferred AV was the Stug model 111. So based on all of that I'm interested in building some dioramas based on those vehicles along with some Russian armour all based on some of the stories that he told me as a kid growing up.

Any help and knowledge that I can get from here would be great. Lots of really nice work on here by the way.

I forgot to say that my name is Tim and I live down in Devon, on Dartmoor. Thanks in advance for any help given.

Another Devonian. There are a few of us on the forum. Welcome to the forum and we look forward to seeing your builds. Happy modelling

Hi Tim
A lot of the modellers on the forum have indeed returned to the hobby after many years. A great story of your father's wartime exploits. There are a few on here who specialize in Russian vehicles.
A warm welcome to this great forum. Just ask and I guarantee someone will have the answer to any query.
Jim

Tim,
welcome to the forum, there are a lot of returnees to the hobby, a lot has changed over the intervening years - any problems, ask away - we won't bite! ( they might try to set you on fire, though ). Above all enjoy yourself
Dave

Welcome Tim, I look forward to seeing what you do. This is a great forum for people returning to the plastic welding hobby. Just ask away when you need help as they’re a very knowledgeable bunch

Welcome aboard Tim. Interesting to hear about your father's story. Would be interesting to hear a bit more in due course. Do I take it he stayed in the UK after the war?

As for StuGs we have our very own StuG obsessive/nutter/expert aka Bobthestug.....

No doubt his radar has already picked up on the mention of StuG in your post.

Good to have you aboard!!

Andrew

And a big welcome from Germany Tim. Have a great time and remember, nobody bites here. Ok, well maybe one or two might. BTW, Panthers were built 55 kms down the road from where I live.......

Prost

Hi Andrew, yes he stayed in England and eventually became a naturalised British citizen. The reason he stayed is that his other choice was to be repatriated to where he came from but that meant being sent to Russia, see the link to learn about Germans in Russia.

https://www.ualberta.ca/~german/AlbertaHistory/Bessarabians.htm

Given that he had spent nearly all of his war fighting in Russia and that he knew what the Russians would do to him if he returned his choices were really made for him, just as well otherwise I would not be typing this now :hungry:

I'll also look for Bob's work, many thanks.

Welcome Tim.:smiling3:
I subscribe everything the others have said and, me too, I'm looking forward to seeing your models.
Andrea

Hi Tim

It's the StuG nutter, have been know to build a few delighted! Delighted to have you on board, fascinating to hear your father's story. Only German vet I knew was a x panzer division mechanic, lovely guy, lost 3 fingers to a Pz 111 Maybach engine in Russia.

Look forward to seeing your work

Bob

Welcome Tim, we have a few Johns and Richards so now another Tim. Like to see how far plastic gets destroyed...just kidding, in no time you'll be building like the rest of us...still muddling away and enjoying every minute of it. :smiling2:

Richard
