discussion Does a 3D Printing section exist here?

I have been a member for about a week-ish. Most of my model making is done by 3D printing the parts. I design the 3D printed parts in CAD programmes. It would be useful to swap ideas etc with other 3D printer and CAD users, so does a dedicated section exist or is there a section I should use?

I think we tend to think of any media is model making

Dosnt matter if its styrene or 3d or wood or card or whatever..... If your doing a car it goes in the car section, if youre doing a boat it goes in the boaty section, etc

3D printing of models and aftermarket items has certainly taken off in the last few years. Lots of manufacturers have entered the market. However people, like yourself, who design and print their own stuff are still quite a rare breed.
I'm certain there would be a lot of interest in seeing your work.

Hi and welcome to the forum. I'm looking forward to seeing your builds.
I have been 3D printing for my job( making architects' models) since its infancy in the early 2000s , and I have been able to incorporate many 3D printed items into my hobby builds, especially since retirement.
My main interest is figures but my Liberty Ship D-Day diorama is almost all 3D printed stuff , apart from the figures, if you're interested.

I tend not to go into too much detail of the nuts and bolts of it on this forum as most people are not actually interested in anything other that the result. I'm afraid it's a bit like suddenly we can have our own injection moulding machine at home- most modelmakers are not interested in the technicalities involved, just what can they get that they might use for their hobby.
At the end of the day,3D printing is just another (albeit revolutionary)tool, like resin and PE which has widened the possibilities for our hobby. ​

I can relate to that

Spent too much of my work life with plastic injection or extrusion machines or putting right the chaos when they go wrong...... I tend to glaze over these days lol

Likewise i spent far too long in the automotive industry (with lots of crossover to injection moulding).... Built kit cars..... Help build championship winning race cars.... Even owned a classic car....... These days im not interested in what makes them go, dont want to get my hands dirty..... Just want to get in and go lol

Hi lee, I'm the same, been designing models using CAD and resin 3D printing. Do you have any pictures of your designs and what type of printer are you using resin or FDM?

Hi Paramaniac.
I have an Ender3 FDM printer, my workhorse for prints that don't need a great deal of detail, and an Anycubic mono 4k resin printer for when I do need detail. I find the resin prints to be fragile and prone to warping, but you can't argue with the level of detail. Both printers are probably 4 to 5 years old. Time flies when you're having fun! I have used the Ender3 to produce the patterns for when I dabbled with metal casting, something I would like to get back into. I've also used the Ender and the Anycubic to produce the Austin Seven model I am working on. As well as numerous Christmas ornaments.
Austin 7 model. The body is FDM but then covered with wood veneer. Most of the other parts are resin including wheels and tyres. The spokes are metal wire.

I must admit being a new member I'm a bit surprised to see the plastic boys on here.
Being in the oldest member bracket I expected models to be handcrafted , not machine
manufactured.
I suppose I can just not click on the forum

MADTONY, I would like to have the skills to scratch build from scratch (forgive the play on words!), but I know I haven't. So when I decided to build 4 models of my A7, a car I built 50 years ago, 3D printing was the way to go. I know there are some large model clubs that don't allow 3D printed models to be judged in competition. I wonder how many of those models that are judged have aftermarket parts of brass and 3D printed plastic? My skills are more towards things in wood. I would be very interested to hear from anyone about how they would go about making some of the bits for my A7 model, i.e, the bonnet with 120 louvres. I wanted to make the bonnet in thin copper. I would also have to make a louvre stamp to create the louvres. Any ideas?

I am so sorry, I didn't make it clear that I was referring exclusively to handcrafted buildings
not any kind of vehicle.
My only excuse is that I am 78 years old but still trying.
