Eduard 1/48 Lavochkin LA7

After a careful sanding down of the filler it looked much better . The rear metal cowling band ( the prominent silver stripes on these and LA5s ) needed building up a little so some thin plastic card was used . Once this was blended in it was remasked and primed . It will probably need a little fine tuning before the top colour goes on and I will need to re do the red nose but I’m happy with how the repair is going so far . Coming n nicely Tony. Shame about the set back but the repair is spot on.

Repair has had its first coat of colour , theres a small light grey area to be added once the dark grey has cured . The red nose is going to get another coat too . I’m happy with how its turned out , once the silver bands have been applied and the natural steel panels round the exhaust area , you hopefully wont be able to tell it was nearly ruined ! Very good, I know you know the blemish is there, but I’m not seeing it now you have the paint on, top notch job on cleaning that up.

Have you cut a piece of foam to cover the cockpit? That looks a neat way of just covering over with masking tape and I think I’ll try that.

Thanks neil , yes its a piece of foam , cut ever so slightly larger than the opening so it holds in and hopefully seals the opening . I use the high density type of make up remover sponges , theyre dirt cheap and easy to cut into shapes for masking .Theres some masking the undercarriage bays too.

Masked up and sprayed the steel areas today - which highlighted the slightly melted exhaust cover plate . At first I though it would be ok but the more I compared it to the other side the worse it looked so it had to be sorted . Luckily its a separate stuck on piece , not part of the fuselage moulding so it was popped off and a new one made from plastic card suitably scribed and bent to shape . This was superglued on and sprayed again and I’m happy with it now . IMG_6693.webpIMG_6695.webpIMG_6696.webpIMG_6697.webpIMG_6698.webpIMG_6699.webpIMG_6700.webp

Looking good Tony, well worth replacing those plates. The heat damage was a bit more extensive than appeared at first.

The lavochkin is now standing on its own two feet ( wheels) and the exhaust staining has been applied . The staining has a particular pattern with stripes on the steel areas which I managed to achieve but arent very visible at the moment in this lighting. The La 5 and La7 both had prominent bare metal bands round the cowling which I added using aluminium tape cut into thin strips . Last few bits now done. Canopy unmasked and fitted , aerial ,wire and pitot added and nav lights painted with Tamiya clear red /green . I’m very happy with the result , especially as the build was pulled out of the fire earlier on ( almost literally !!) . Heres a few to finish the build log and more to come on a completed thread . Thanks to all who have been watching . IMG_6808.webpIMG_6816.webpIMG_6813.webp
