Great thread Tim,

I'm still alive and agree with the above listed films and series. Good stuff indeed!!! My list of favorites would include most of them and let's not forget 633 Squadron too...

Some of my favorites,

Castle Keep - Totally off the wall with star quality and a good kinda twisted story...
Valkyrie - Good plot and the acting ain't too shabby either. Lot's of original vehicles, planes and such included...
Cross of Iron - Part 1 was good stuff, but part 2 wasn't as good. Gotta love Sam Peckinpah (The Wild Bunch)...
Stalingrad - German cast and a really good, deep take on the whole siege of the city...
Platoon - A real classic!!! Enough said. Shotgun anybody???....
Der Untergang - Only in German and about Adolph's last days as told by his secretary in Berlin...
Apocalypse Now - Ya gotta love Mangos....
Das Boot - The original film that was over 6 hours long but tells a chilling tale...

Prost
Allen
Nice list Allen. Several there I’ve not seen. Platoon, absolutely! The bunker scene is pretty scary, and I love the use of white rabbit by JA....

Yes, on the film channels, but 'mainstream' TV, doubt it (got the DVD, so no matter for me!)
Hogans Heroes was a 'must see' when I was a kid!
I've all of the MASH on DVD - surprising how it 'evolved' over time or not surprising, given the political atmosphere changing over the years.
Doubt if many of these make “Mainstream” TV these days Gerry. Know what you mean about MASH, but it was always watchable. Hawkeye’s story in the last episode was truly haunting.

The best thing about this thread is noting all the highly recommended films I haven't seen yet. To add my own, nothing unusual or off the wall I'm afraid :
Battle of Britain.
Dambusters.
Memphis Belle. A bit of a theme here isn't there ?
I do enjoy land based films, but the above always catch my attention.

Good set of actors there. Always though Wayne was better in Westerns though. Truly iconic in Searchers and True Grit.

Saving Private Ryan, for obvious reasons.
Downfall, Bruno Ganz played Hitler fantastically, the speeches, the tantrums...
The Cruel Sea, I'm an ex matelot... what's not to love about a cruel sea?!
Platoon, Hamburger Hill, Apocalypse Now... there's to many great films out there to sit and list
Band of Brothers is up the top somewhere

Loving this......I’m going to add a few more of my own favourites....

Millions like us; Great look at the role of women in wartime, with a heart wrenching ending..

First of the few.....evolution of the spitfire....1942 film.

To be or not to be, the 1942 original. How could they coin the “Concentration camp Erhadt joke in 1942 is totally beyond me.

The original “Dunkirk”. The new version is just a pale imitation.

I am a sucker of the black and white films ;)

But the Dukes' last scene in Iwo Jima is classic, as he shakes out a Lucky Strike & the snipers bullet goes through the pack, or at least that's how I remember it. Lee Marvin, a WWII vet, in The Big Red One. Robert Mitchum, another WWII vet, in Anzio & The Longest Day.

Ok, I didn't know "Der Untergang" was "Downfall" in English, with Bruno Ganz. Thanks Lee! It was a wild film.....

Tim, have you seen Castle Keep???

ye gods, theres so many!

battle of britain
where eagles dare
great escape
kellys heroes
blackhawk down
full metal jacket
zulu
big red one
apocalypse now
band of brothers.....................cos someone i know (fellow model maker) was an extra in the platoon....played germans too............so its a case of 'can you spot him'

You can keep them all.

Saints and Soldiers. Superb film.

Not far behind that classic is Murphy's War.

Ok, not exactly a war film, but who remembers "The Boys From Brazil"....That was pretty off the wall...........

Not really in to war films but as a Robert Mitchum fan I liked The Hunters about Korean war jet jockeys and also The Enemy Below when he was a destroyer captain trying to kill a U boat.

Andy.

Singing 'Men of Harlech' in Zulu; may not be historically valid but totally moving nevertheless! There really are some classics out there! (Remember the Khazi of Kabul? A c--p joke but it works for me!) And the Panzerlied ...

A couple of more recent films worth a watch, Hacksaw Ridge and American Sniper. Both based on true stories.

Platoon is the first that comes to my mind, quickly followed by Das Boot (but the miniseries instead of the movie) and Der Untergang.

Others that I can think of just now (I’m terrible at listing things from memory) that I remember as being pretty good were Three Kings, as well as Jarhead.
