Should not worry Ron think you have started a great article and a great deal has come out of it. Every one is entitled to their opinion and I see no reason for people not putting their views strongly it is a natural trait.

No body has been personal about any one else.

No body has gone berserk (or is it beerserk). Great tribute to all members writing here.

So tank wreck in peace Ron. The force be with you in many ways.

I'd like your thoughts on this please....
I'm only using the build below to try and illustrate how strange 'Great Build' awards can become.......

Recently Derek posted his excellent KG5 model and received just 5 'Great Build' doodahs.

He then posted that diddy ship and received 6 for something he didn't even make!

His battleship is a stunning example of the modellers art. The work, patience, painting skills, not to mention time and expense were of the highest order - Yet he only received those 5 gongs and precious little comments along the way, and after completion.

I know one shouldn't expect awards as a right, but surely his model deserved more praise than it received.....Unfortunately, that seems to be the 'boaties lot'

Which eventually brings me to the reason for this thread.

Personally I don't like all those 'like', 'great build' thingies and would like to see them removed. We have all seen builds that, sometimes by the builders own admission, were not up to scratch, yet received double figure great builds.

Some models have obviously been rushed, yet still get a fistful of top awards. They are dished out far too frequently, almost as if the giver is just going through the motions, rather than giving a lesser reward, possibly thinking that the builder will check who gave what and see that "The cheapskate only gave me a 'Like'!"........Getting rid of these would prevent any such thoughts by either party.

I would seriously like these things removed and just return to the simple comment, be it praise, helpful tips, indifference, whatever. I understand that folks do like to receive these things, but in my opinion they are over used and as a result have become worthless. I won't be using them anymore, but will return to the written word...Far more friendly anyway!

Please don't 'shout' at me personally, but I would like members constructive general feed back on this.

Thanks,

Ron
I agree with Ron. We build and are (normally) proud to show our results off to the forum for discussion. We don't need 'Great Build' etc. A simple comment would be more useful.

Ok all "naughtiness" aside. I actually agree with Ron about the misuse of the gbs. I wish they weren't takin away but they may have been thrown around too much. I personally NEVER gave a gb to anyone that I didn't think deserved one. The written word to me IS better and I personally like when people give written feedback to me , but the lil medals were a nice touch too. I think you guys should just reserve gb for those excellent builds that stand out from the others. Im by far not in the elite top group of builders here and would personally be happy with likes and some comments over the medals if my build is only good. So maybe bring them back and lets try to reserve them to the builds that are truly GREAT , and not load up good builds with them. If not ,at leastbring back the others. The funny/agree/disagree/friendly and so on.

I kind of agree, GB should be for what it means GREAT BUILD though a bit less bandying about with them and a bit more serious consideration should be used when giving them. I'm with Ron on this one, never meant for them to totally eliminated so fast, only that their value seemed to be decreasing even in the short time I've been a member of the site. I myself always commented when I gave them .

Can I just get things put straight-

It was not me that has removed them. They got removed I think on a miss-understanding. I contacted John,as I do when I want to instigate a major change, just to be sure he is ok with it.

It was rather late and I asked if it would be OK If 'we' thinned them out and had a rethink.

The next thing I know was they had been removed all bare the one like.

I am at present trying to figure out how to get them back, as they have not simply been disabled but removed, so they will need setting up again. IF they come back.

As I said John and I are still writing to each other about it.

I think we have got the picture that you all miss them.

If they make a come back there will be fewer options and as jujst before they vanished, the Great Build gong will only appear in the completed sections.

Can we all just calm down and build something. Please.

Same a Ron, my comments were restricted to the Great Build gong being overused so very surprised to see all but one dissapear.

So was I.

I'm hopping to get them all opened again, then I will activate the ones that I think should be there... If we find the need I can then open and close them as we see fit.

Not being dictatorial, just that I know how well things go once a committee is involved.

Right now my thoughts are:

great build, but only in the completed sections.

The general purpose ones, helpful, informative, funny, like and agree. In all the sections. Also the noted one.

Disagree and don't like.... I'm not sure. They have their uses but can also, if used without supporting comments, cause a storm of indignant recipients.

Would this pour oil on the waters?

...... Ian. You are a genious. Sounds like a jolly fine solution..........

I did notice that a while ago, this subject cropped up, and after a debate folk didn't use the gong as much. Funny thing, do we have threads with few posts, or even non, or reams of comments repeating themselves. At least the icons gave a different option. I do hope folk are not going to be falling out over a few pixels-keep or go-who cares-use em-don't use em.

Would this be a solution: Either under the construction or finished items on the title could we not have a drop down option that says crit please. This way the thread can have crits if the OP wants them. I know we have a critique corner...with all of seven topics...that doesn't seem to be used much-bin it and add the crit wanted in a title.

I fear the critique corner is on borrowed time. I to would rather that this could be handled under either the build thread or the completed thread...Most that post a finished build say comments welcome. If you have a problem under the build bring it up during the build. I see no real point in a section that gets little use and is for all intents and purpose being mostly used as a help thread....but thats just my thoughts on that.

I said it wouldn't work we are all too nice :D

Personally it makes no difference to me if there is no GB gong, but this is how i see it..... There are loads of highly skilled modellers on here, and when they post a completed build, you just know a GB gong is a no brainer, because the models just ooze class....... So when one from someone of a lesser skill level is posted, i dont compare it to any others i have seen... I just appreciate the fact that they have built something to the best of their ability, and taken the same time and care as everyone else, so they are no less deserving of a GB gong... I dont feel as though we should be judging someones efforts, just applauding them.

If someone wants help/guidence/comments or criticism, they should use a build thread (as suggested by Ian) for that very purpose.

Thank you all for a lively debate. We have all behaved, discussed and achieved.

The icons are back. Well all the ones I intend adding.

Due to a change in the provider, the original icon images are no longer at hand, so we have new ones. Sorry no picture of a medal, I though a Ying/Yang symbol fitted the bill.

I think we can call this subject concluded.

If there was an icon for good conduct, you all deserve one.

Amos you know I love you - er uh - you know what I mean  but Great Build should be just for that purpose. I know every one has a bit of a different opinion of what great is but there should be something reserved for those that truly are. By the way I am in no way tooting my own horn here because I think you should know by now I am my own worst critic. Great to me means I look at a build dio or what ever and think WOW that is truly incredible ! To hand them out like so much candy or to give them as a means of "paying it forward" does not IMO help those who for lack of a better term "need improvement" While not wanting to load up the site with a bunch of icons the spoken word seems to be the best method. I never criticize, only try to give helpful hints here and there. And one should never think his talents are so substandard that he shouldn't state where he feels improvements can be made. Sorry Moni, I mean THEIR talents. Wow you would hope Obama was as serious about the Iran nuke talks as we seem to be about this subject!
